At the SAGES and AHPBA conferences this 3-4 weeks ago, I had the pleasure of exploring the exhibit halls in search of innovative surgical technologies. I encountered several remarkable advancements, including a magnetic compression anastomosis device. This device offers an incisionless, sutureless, and staple-free approach for creating side-to-side duodeno-ileal anastomoses, particularly in minimally invasive and laparoscopic/robotic operations. Once the tissue has sufficiently healed to support the anastomosis, the device is naturally expelled from the body. WOW!
Another noteworthy technology I saw is SurgSmart, which focuses on integrating artificial intelligence into surgical procedures. This system enhances surgical techniques through real-time AI assistance and provides automatic analysis and feedback post-operation. This innovation aims to improve treatment processes and elevate surgical quality.

Additionally, I learned about a cold therapy solution that utilizes an ice pack abdominal binder designed for pain relief, which is believed to facilitate the healing process. Since I use an abdominal binder on my patients at the end of each operation, I would be very interested in testing this innovation 😊
I was particularly intrigued by two companies, Ziosoft and FujiFilm, which have developed a product that incorporates 3D augmented reality images for surgical planning. This innovation marks a significant advancement in the field of Surgery, offering a range of applications. Preoperatively, it can be utilized for surgical planning and the training of residents and fellows, facilitating a deeper understanding of complex procedures. Additionally, it serves as an effective tool for patient education, helping individuals comprehend the specifics of their disease location and the challenges it presents. Intraoperatively, this technology can assist surgeons during challenging dissections, enhancing precision and confidence. Ultimately, the integration of 3D augmented reality into surgical practices has the potential to improve patient outcomes and optimize operational efficiencies.
Lastly, as I’m writing this post I realized that Intuitive DV5 ecosystem already has some of these incredible technologies mentioned above except for the magnetic anastomosis and abdominal binder. What an incredible time to practice medicine.
