One of the biggest reasons many Nigerians struggle to land USD-paying remote jobs is because our CVs are only optimized for local hiring.
If you’re targeting an international remote job in 2026, here are some CV mistakes you need to fix:
1. Your location is working against you.
❌ Lagos, Nigeria
To an international recruiter, this can immediately raise questions about your timezone, availability, or relocation.
✅ Try:
Remote (GMT +1) or Remote (UTC +1)
Make your remote availability obvious.
2. You’re using too many Nigerian-specific acronyms.
❌ NYSC, HND, SIWES, LGA, NEPA, BSc (Ed), etc.
International recruiters may not know what these mean, and they’re unlikely to stop and Google them.
Instead, write them out or add context:
• NYSC → National Youth Service Corps / National Service • HND → Higher National Diploma • SIWES → Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme
The goal is simply to make your CV understandable without requiring research.
3. Your experience reads like a job description.
❌ Responsible for managing social media.
That tells recruiters what you did, but not whether you were good at it.
✅ Show outcomes:
Grew a Twitter account from 3K to 52K followers in 6 months, contributing to a 40% increase in inbound leads.
Focus on results, numbers, and impact.
4. You’re leading with education instead of experience.
For international roles, your ability to deliver results often matters more than where you went to school.
✅ Put your experience, skills, and achievements first.
Move education lower on the CV unless you’re an entry-level candidate without meaningful work experience.
5. Your CV doesn’t show that you can work globally.
❌ Only listing your salary in naira ❌ Mentioning tools that are mainly relevant locally ❌ Not stating your timezone ❌ No evidence of remote or international collaboration
Instead, highlight things like:
• Working with international clients • Remote collaboration • Async communication • Cross-border teams • Global tools like Slack, Notion, Jira, GitHub, etc.
Remember:
International recruiters scan CVs quickly.
If they can’t understand who you are, what you do, and the value you bring within a few seconds, they’ll probably move on.
Your CV shouldn’t just say “I’m qualified,” it should make a global recruiter immediately think you can effectively work with their team.
Hope this helps.

Imagine ChatGPT giving me skincare advice 😂
ChatGpt: “Get a gentle cleanser, azelaic acid, moisturizer and SPF 50.”
Me: “My budget is ₦8k.”
ChatGPT: “Okay, just buy the sunscreen.” 😭😂
