Emerging from my six month study cave hibernation to say: passed my PhD qualifying exam!!!!! And it went super well???!??! Thrilled and so excited. πβ¨ππ½π₯
Get hype, world. We're gonna do some dope science together.
@abigailthiemkey It's a tough road, but if it's what you want more than anything in the world, you'll regret not trying your hardest for it. Just keep your eyes open and stay flexible, as well. Good to have dreams - good to aim for dreams! But always have a safety net.
@abigailthiemkey Being on the very cutting edge of research and only doing research isn't for everyone, and it's possible to find a balance, and that's a totally valid choice and extremely important, tbh, bc good teachers create good teachers and researchers
@abigailthiemkey But, if you don't want the stress of publish or perish, you can be an excellent researcher AND teach. You just need to decide how much focus you want to allocate to both or either. That'll decide where you lean.
Isnβt pursuing a PhD supposed to be a time to learn how to be a researcher? It seems at time (at least on Twitter) folks want aspiring PhD students to be fully formed researchers. Thatβs not how that works.
When I received 2 scholarships back in April, the first thing I thought was βDid I receive these because I check a diversity box?β which was really crappy
New neighbors unlocked ππ
Saw this group of giraffes (technically, a "tower") standing near the roadside on one of the game farms while going to a farm visit this morning in Ghanzi District, Kalahari, Botswana
Just a reminder to folks that I'll be transitioning largely over to Instagram @bescicurious soon, as Twitter continues to be less of an active platform. This account will still exist, but for more active scicomm, or to connect with me, please check me out there!
