I’m proud to be a NYer and recognize there is some role for law enforcement. there’s also a responsibility to keep our fellow subway riders safe, for @MTA stations to follow emergency standards/ADA compliance and for us to use our brains when addressing issues, esp financial ones

Locking emergency subway platform doors to prevent fare evasion is not only a foolish response to the “issue” of nonpayment, but also incredibly dangerous and disrespectful to everyone on trains in BK last week where emergency doors helped people flee a shooting/get medical care

As part of the crackdown on fare evasion, more emergency exits in NYC subways are locked. This is wrong and dangerous for countless reasons. Also a person on my train couldn’t get their baby stroller out. I tried helping them lift it over the turnstiles but it wouldn’t fit. 🤬

The debate is nuanced but when we talk about reallocating resources to the agencies/community groups who will actually enhance our safety, we mean stop funding @NYPD if their officers are primarily 1) arresting people who can’t afford subway fare 2) on their phones in the subway
