That’s why the white working class have been fed a diet of racism since the dawn of the colonial era. Many still haven’t realised that that racism keeps them - the “poor white trash from the Deep South”, the average Englishman, Dutchman or Belgian, firmly in the pocket of “their own” exploiting class, the monopoly capitalists, the colonialists, the imperialists.

So here’s the truth: racism is a weapon used by capitalism, aimed to keep the working class enslaved.

These quaint pictures of the french bourgeois children at play with their nannies, are laughable if they are meant to represent the average experience of “France”. Where are the peasantry, the workers, the street urchins? Where are the colonial subjects and slaves? Where is the grinding poverty and exploitation that gave rise to its modern counterpart?

I was very happy today to meet and have lunch with Comrade Wang Ruijun, a leading member of the Guangdong CPC regional committee.

Comrade Wang grew up as part of a poor minority in Inner Mongolia, but his hard work and dedication to the people meant that the party offered him many opportunities to develop and travel in the interests of serving the people and developing the Chinese economy.

Besides the many fascinating things he has seen and done in the course of his work (researching how to build highways that are in harmony with nature was one of his missions in Canada, for example), I was personally very moved to discover that he has met in person the heroes of a famous revolutionary Chinese children’s story, Little Sisters of the Grassland.

This true story of heroic small children taking care of the communal flock during a terrible storm was a formative tale from my childhood, spread around the world by the cultural efforts of Chairman Mao’s China.

The events from the book inspired a generation of young pioneers inside and outside of China, and they took place close to where Comrade Wang grew up. He told me the sisters of the story are still living and still serving the people in Mongolia. ❤️

Josie (6 years old), Bertha (6 years old) and Sophie (10 years old) worked regularly at the Maggioni Canning Company.

Work began at 4 AM and the three would make from $9 to $15 a week. Sophie would do six pots of oyster a day and her mother who also worked with her said "She don't go to school. Works all the time."

Through such photos, Lewis Hine documented the harsh working conditions borne by thousands of children, who were sent to work soon after they could walk, and were paid based on how many buckets of oysters they shucked daily.

Mr Hines wrote of one photograph: ‘All but the very smallest babies work. Begin work at 3:30am and expected to work until 5pm.’ He covered around 50,000 miles a year, photographing children from Chicago to Florida working in coal mines and factories.

These photos helped to raise an outcry against child labor and made the American public become widely aware of the scope of the problem. This resulted in the establishment of organizations such as the National Child Labor Committee, in 1904, which led the fight against child labor.
