The world lost a good man: Colonel Daniel Markert. I watched his kids grow into fine, wholesome men, albeit from a distance. He was a Christian brother in whom I confided and who confided in me all the struggles that we undergo living in this world but striving to aim higher than the misdirections in this world.

Dan was an integral part of my life and my career. I remember standing with him when he gave me a copy of “Relentless Strike” as he shared with me how I could be of use to special operations. He co-wrote and proofed my first senior leadership brief to a decade ago which launched my new career. It was Dan who catalyzed that and his DNA is in all of the work I do even today. He was formative in my work and Its evolution of TACFIT. The “tactical” in tactical fitness came from Dan.

It’s impossible to untangle his influence on how I am as a husband, father, and man of service.

We worked together, laughed together, prayed together, and spent precious time together with each others’ families. He was what I feel is the best complement I could give: “a good man.” Too damned few in this world.

He valued service, honesty, integrity, and piousness, and work ethic. This hits hard. I shall miss my brother. But I know, he is in God’s embrace, and those who know him are forever impacted by the life he lived, and so many who never knew him, were impacted by his life of service to our Nation.

I don’t know the right words here. And I say these things out into the world, because you who read this probably did not know him personally, but you felt his impact on the world.

This is one of so many photos I have of us in so many cool places doing cool things, but this brotherhood is best seen in this photo of being family men, in love with being of service in His name.

I love you, brother. I will keep loving life the way you taught me through our years together.
