I submitted a major thesis for an advanced writing course at university. I was shocked when I received an "F" grade, and my heart dropped to my stomach reading the professor's note: "Plagiarism. Come speak to me."

I felt utterly devastated.

Professor: "You didn't include citations for any of your major points. That's plagiarism, regardless of your intentions."

Me: "They were my own thoughts. I didn't get them from anyone else. I thought that was the entire point of this class--to learn how to articulate my thoughts clearly in writing."

Professor: "That's not how advanced writing works. But I will give you another chance. You may add the citations and re-submit it."

I spent the next few days in the library, searching for published writers who were thinking along the same lines as I was.

My re-submitted thesis received an "A", even though nothing changed except that I gave credit to others for my own work.
