On this world there are four blood types. A, B, AB and O.

Every medical book will tell you they evolved naturally over thousands of years through genetic mutation and environmental adaptation. That's the official story. Nor is it complete.

Type O blood is the universal donor. It can give to all, but it can receive only from its own. It is the oldest blood type on the planet, dating back more than 40,000 years. Before colonization and mixing, every indigenous population on earth was almost entirely type O. The original human template was O.

Type A blood seems to have suddenly appeared in the archeological record about 25,000 years ago and is concentrated in Europe and parts of Asia. B type evolved independently mainly in the Himalayan highlands and Central Asia. The rarest type, AB, came last, and only in areas where A and B populations overlapped.
