GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS ACCUSED OF THE MURDER OF A FORENSIC INVESTIGATOR GRANTED BAIL
The Pretoria Magistrates' Court has granted bail of R80 000 each to Emmanuel Neverdie Mkhabela (47), a Protocol Manager attached to the Office of the Premier in Mpumalanga, and Eckson Jabulani Mkhonto (53), a Vetting Officer also attached to the Office of the Premier in Mpumalanga.
The accused are facing charges of premeditated murder, unlawful possession of a firearm, and unlawful possession of ammunition.
The charges relate to the murder of Mabidi Mashaba, a Forensic Investigator employed by the Mpumalanga Provincial Government.
It is alleged that on 07 September 2023, the deceased was travelling from Mpumalanga to his residence in Pretoria. While driving along Hardy Muller Circle in Villieria, Pretoria, a vehicle allegedly occupied by the two accused pulled alongside the deceased's vehicle, and multiple shots were fired before the suspects fled the scene.
Following the shooting, the deceased reportedly managed to stop his vehicle and contacted his supervisor, informing them that the two accused had shot at him. He was later found by security personnel in the area and transported to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Following extensive police investigations, Mkhonto was arrested at a guesthouse in Mpumalanga, while Mkhabela handed himself over to the Villieria Police Station.
During the bail proceedings, the State opposed the release of both accused, arguing that they are facing serious Schedule 6 offences, that the murder was premeditated, and that, if released on bail, they could interfere with State witnesses who are known to them.
Prosecutor Chris Maruma further submitted that Mkhonto is in possession of two identity documents and that Mkhabela poses a flight risk as he regularly travels outside the country.
The court, however, found that it was in the interests of justice to release both accused on bail of R80 000 each, subject to conditions, including that they must not directly or indirectly contact any State witnesses.
The matter was postponed to 06 August 2026, for a High Court trial date.

5 women murdered in less than a week: Cape Town Cases Expose the Human Cost of GBV and Forensic Delays
Suraan Windvogel, a 31-year-old engineer from Bokmakierie, was found hidden in a black refuse bag in Kewtown. Her family says she had no children, had lost her father, and was struggling with bipolar disorder.
In Woodstock, a 31-year-old woman was shot in the face in Aberdeen Street. In Gugulethu, two women, aged 41 and 46, were shot dead in Kanana. In Kraaifontein, a 35-year-old woman was found murdered on a pavement after a shooting.
These are not just “GBV statistics”. These are women, families and communities destroyed.
From a policing point of view, this is exactly why we fight so hard against DNA backlogs, forensic delays, empty stores, broken systems and stations without the basic tools to do the job. When SAPS detectives, forensic teams and laboratories do not have what they need, victims wait, families wait, and dangerous suspects get more room to move.
The president declared GBV a national disaster, but on the ground too much of it has been lip service. A declaration means nothing if DNA results are delayed, detectives are overloaded, victim support is uneven, and police stations are left to manage murder scenes without proper capacity.
Aa 60-year-old suspect was arrested in Suraan’s case and that the docket has been changed from an inquest to murder. We were in court for his first appearance yesterday at the Athlone Magistrate Court.
We need real accountability, properly resourced detectives, functioning forensic labs, working DNA systems, and police stations equipped to investigate these cases from the first hour, not after public pressure.
Justice for Suraan Windvogel. Justice for every woman whose name never made the front page.

Remember Constable Azile Nxokwana? 🇿🇦
The 30-year-old SAPS officer from Centane Police Station captured South Africa’s heart after a community member praised her kindness and professionalism.
Following the viral post, Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lt Gen Vuyisile Ncata commended her for embodying the kind of policing that restores public trust.
A Walter Sisulu University graduate in Psychology and Sociology, Constable Nxokwana says her studies help her serve every person with patience, respect and understanding.
Her story is proof that one dedicated officer can make a lasting difference. 👏💙
South Africans, at what point do we admit that we have normalised failure?
How do we accept a system where citizens can lose up to 41% of their salaries to tax, yet corruption continues to thrive, rural roads remain undrivable, municipalities collapse, and local councillors operate with little to no accountability?
Taxation without visible service delivery is not governance; it is betrayal.
This country does not lack money. It lacks ethical leadership, consequence management, and political will. We cannot keep comparing ourselves to countries like Qatar and pretending the difference is luck. The difference is leadership, planning, discipline and accountability.
South Africa deserves a government that respects every rand taken from its people. The amount of tax we are paying is just insane😭💔
