[BREAKING} Statement from 70th Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on the Sentencing of Dr. Hak Ja Han

"The sentencing of religious leader Dr. Hak Ja Han to two years in prison is deeply troubling for anyone who cares about religious liberty and free expression. The evidence suggests that Dr. Han was targeted for her religious and political beliefs.

Dr. Han has never been charged with so much as a parking ticket in her life, yet has already been detained for nearly a year in terrible conditions despite her advanced age and health problems.

This is a betrayal of South Korea’s hard-won democratic values. I pray that the government of South Korea reconsiders this case on appeal and does not go further down the path of religious persecution."

South Korea’s backsliding on religious freedom should be concerning to everyone. The miscarriage of justice in the case of Dr. Hak Ja Han alarmingly shows that its judicial system is failing to live up to democratic standards

Dr. Han, the 83-year old leader of the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification, has been convicted in a case where the allegations against her came from a disgruntled and disgraced former church officer who had already been expelled from the Family Federation. She has serious health issues and no criminal history but is being treated like a hardened criminal.

Perhaps most alarming in all of this are the reports that the Chinese Communist Party, no friend to religious freedom or other democratic values, is partially behind this and other persecutions by supporting the groups advocating for the prosecutions. Dr. Han’s family and the church are well known for their anti-communist crusades and South Korea should protect against CCP influences in its legal system.

It is a travesty of justice that Dr. Han has been convicted. I hope the courts will consider her health and allow her to stay out of prison while her appeal is being considered.

旧統一教会の二世たちが検証する「解散命令からの120日レポート」

現役信徒として、見過ごせない最高裁判断を解説しています。

旧統一教会について過去に批判的な講演をしていた沖野眞已判事。

教会側は、裁判の公正に疑いがあるとして忌避を申し立てましたが、最高裁はこれを却下。

その後、解散命令は最高裁で確定しましたが、沖野判事は、確定した本案の審理には加わっておらず、理由も明らかにされていません。

その後に出された決定文は、わずか4ページでした。

一審は107ページ。二審は179ページ。

信教の自由にも関わる重大な事案にもかかわらず、なぜこの結論に至ったのか、憲法上の論点をどう検討したのか。

その説明は不十分に思います。

これは旧統一教会を支持するかどうかだけの問題ではありません。

宗教法人に国家が重大な権力を行使するとき、司法は憲法をどう守るのか。

僕たちは、そこを問い続ける必要があると思います。

解散命令の審理では、次の書面が裁判所に提出されています。

・学者・弁護士・宗教者らの意見書：多数
・信者・外国人当事者の陳述書：770通超
・信者・教会側が主張する人権侵害の記録：600件超
・「宗教法人の解散について公平かつ公正な審理を」求める有識者署名：1000名超（東京高裁へ提出）

最高裁の特別抗告でも、意見書と当事者書面は改めて大量に出されています。

いまも旧統一教会を、あたかも犯罪集団であるかのように語る人はいます。一方で、一部メディアが描いた像をそのまま実態だとは見ていない人も、少なくありません。

問題は好き嫌いではなく、

これだけの声が「世論の空気」で実質的に顧みられなかったのだとしたら、それは一つの教団の問題で終わりません。

次に同じ論理を向けられるのは、別の少数派かもしれません。日本の法治そのものの問題です。
