How bad is flying for your carbon footprint? 🌏👣✈️

Taking one long-haul flight generates more carbon emissions than many people around the world produce in a whole year – and more than an average European emits with heating their home and eating.

@parloamestessa Yes. But first we have to downsize aviation as much as possible (eliminate non-necessary flights) in order to reduce energy demand. E-fuels are costly and energy intensive and also have an environmental impact. Let's use them as little and wisely as possible.

While to Western Europeans, it might seem normal to fly, this ‘normality’ has only existed in the last decades, and is still rare on a worldwide scale. Many people cannot afford flying, or are not allowed to do so because of restrictive migration policies.

Only 5-20% of the world population has ever taken a flight.
Of the few percent of the world population who have ever flown, an even smaller proportion flies regularly. For example, numbers for England show that 10% of the residents take more than half of the flights abroad.

Who flies, who doesn’t – and who cannot fly? 🤔✈️

To keep global temperature rise to under 1.5°C, we have to cut consumption-based greenhouse gas emissions down to 2.5t CO2 equivalents per capita in 2030, 1.4t 2040 and 0.7t 2050.
One long-haul flight already exceeds this budget.
