En esta imagen podemos ver a un tipo de mirada triste centrando su atención en un par de “cosas” que hay en el suelo. La imagen es de 1904 y está tomada en el antiguo Congo belga. El tipo se llama Nsala y se encuentra en la misión de Wala. Ha caminado casi un día entero para llegar hasta allí porque le han dicho que en esa misión hay una señora blanca interesada en conocer lo que otros blancos le hacen a la gente de Nsala. Así que al llegar a la misión le entregó a esa señora, la misionera Alice Seeley Harris, un atado de hojas en cuyo interior había dos pequeños bultos. El día anterior los agentes de la Compañía Anglo-Belga del Caucho, presidida por el rey de Bélgica, Leopoldo II, habían llegado a la aldea de Nsala para castigarles por no haber cumplido con su cuota de recogida de caucho.
Los castigos al Pueblo congoleño por no recoger la cuota de caucho fueron inmortalizados por la cámara de Alice Seeley en más de un centenar de fotografías. Y lo que miraba Nsala era el pie y la mano de su hija de cinco años. La misionera volvió a Europa con sus fotos y se convirtió en ferviente activista contra los asesinatos y torturas de las gentes congoleñas. Mientras tanto, Leopoldo II se convirtió, gracias al caucho, en una de las personas más ricas del planeta.
Hace unos años, con la conmemoración del 60 aniversario de la independencia de Congo, el actual rey Felipe de Bélgica pidió perdón por los 10 millones de muertos que dejó en esas tierras su tatarabuelo Leopoldo II. De lo de pagar indemnizaciones con la fortuna familiar obtenida a costa de esos muertos no dijo cosa alguna.
