According to psychology, one of the most common mistakes people make in relationships is assuming that their partner thinks, feels, and processes the world the same way they do. This is called the false consensus effect. You project your own emotional patterns onto them. You assume that if they loved you, they would react the way you react, express love the way you express it, apologize the way you apologize. And when they do not, you interpret it as a lack of love. But that is not fair. People are wired differently. They have different attachment styles, different love languages, different coping mechanisms, different nervous systems. Your partner may love you deeply, but express it in ways that do not match your expectations. The key is not to assume. It is to learn. To ask. To be curious about how they experience the world. Because love is not about finding someone who loves you exactly the way you love them. It is about understanding how they love, and choosing to receive it for what it is.

Returned a library book four years late yesterday.

The librarian scanned it, looked at her screen, then at me.

Her: This was due September 2019.

Me: I know.

Her: The fine is two hundred and forty dollars.

Me: I know.

Her: (pause)

Her: Why are you returning it now?

Me: I'm moving. Found it in a box. Couldn't leave town knowing I stole from the library.

Her: You didn't steal it. You borrowed it and forgot.

Me: For four years.

Her: What's the book?

Me: "How to Build Better Habits."

Her: (trying not to smile)

Her: The irony is not lost on me.

Me: Can I just pay the fine?

Her: We cap fines at fifty dollars. But I have to ask.....did you read it?

Me: Three times, actually. Kept meaning to return it.

Her: Did it work? The habits thing?

Me: (pause)

Me: I'm here, aren't I?

She waived the fine completely.

Her: Consider it a graduation gift.

Me: From what?

Her: From being the person who keeps things for four years.

I checked out a new book before leaving. She smiled when she scanned it.

Her: This one's due in three weeks.

Me: I'll have it back in two.

I did.

She looked genuinely shocked.

Her: Character growth.

Me: Told you the book worked.

I find that many women have internalised the idea that it’s a man’s job to ‘lead’ or steer a relationship, so they just wait and wait for him to define it because whenever he chooses to is the right time. They want more but are afraid to ask a simple question or start an honest conversation because they’re hoping he’ll eventually do it.

But you’re an equal participant. Clarity is something you should actively seek, not something you sit and wait on. You have every right to state what you want, ask where things are headed, and leave if the answer isn’t what you’re looking for.

Why even hand someone else that much power over your life? Stop treating yourself like a passenger in your own story. You have agency. Use it.

Obi Ezeude built a multibillion naira business - Beloxxi by selling only one type of crackers biscuit. Till today, they're still not diversified and still make only crackers - though now in variants. As at 2016, they raised about $80m capital for a minority stake. Going by that, they're likely a unicorn by now. Another makes multibillions from kulikuli distribution.

Yes you can build a unicorn styled successful business out of nigeria by selling one product. The problem is that we benchmark our success metrics with the USA market standard, when we are not selling to the same market and the same dynamics or purchasing power. Another factor is the opacity around company performance and numbers, except for those who are publicly listed. Most companies operate in secrecy and seldom disclose their numbers, valuation or indices even after fund raises. So it's tough to properly value them and assess their impact.

Our market creates its own unicorns. It's just that we keep assessing our businesses from the same lense as those that operate in America. I think it's time for us to also develop parameters to value our own companies and maybe create an African Unicorn category - or a new name for it.

“Distribution is everything” merchants hate to see me coming because lol.

Opay tried every other distribution strategy but people didn’t use the payment until they fixed the “payment” itself and massive growth came from word-of-mouth.

Startups who do not have spending power wanting to run marketing and distribution like deep-pocketed giants will never make sense to me.

1. Build a solid product (most important)
2. Have a competitive advantage
3. Make it super easy for early users to get to the “aha” moment and enter the referral/viral loop.

Letting gurus whine you to spend recklessly on “distribution” is a choice.
