@AirplaneVa @Reagan_Airport@FAANews@ArlingtonVA@MWAAHQ DCA has multiple departure procedures. NextGen procedures use RNAV technology and curves to maximize overflight of the Potomac. The pre-NextGen departure (National-8) is straight-out. Some aircraft are unable to fly the NextGen (RNAV) procedures.
@PalisadesN @AirplaneVa @Reagan_Airport@FAANews@ArlingtonVA@MWAAHQ Keep in mind the Airport doesn't control aircraft. Air Traffic Control (FAA) and the pilot-in-command jurisdiction over that. The Airport can only make recommendations.
@AirplaneVa @Reagan_Airport@FAANews@ArlingtonVA@MWAAHQ Some of the variations can be based on which departure procedure the aircraft is using. But no existing procedure will enable following all of the turns of the Potomac with precision. Would be easier if the river was a straight(er) line.
