Mitigation and adaptation are crucial strategies for tackling climate change, but they address the problem in different ways.
•Climate Mitigation:
Definition: Mitigation refers to efforts to reduce or prevent the emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs) and limit future global warming. This includes strategies to reduce the production of these gases, as well as increasing the capacity of natural sinks to absorb carbon, like forests.
Examples: Using renewable energy, planting trees, promoting public or non-motorised transportation, and improving the energy efficiency of buildings.
Objective: The main goal of mitigation is to address the root cause of climate change by reducing the amount of GHGs in the atmosphere, which in turn limits the impact of climate change in the future.
•Climate Adaptation:
Definition: Adaptation refers to adjusting our natural or human systems in response to the actual or expected impacts of climate change. It is a continuous process that helps communities, regions, and countries to better prepare for and respond to the adverse effects of climate change.
Examples: Building dykes and barriers to protect against sea-level rise, developing more efficient irrigation systems to cope with drought, and cultivating climate-resistant crop varieties.
Objective: The main goal of adaptation is to reduce the vulnerability of communities and ecosystems to the negative impacts of climate change, and to take advantage of any beneficial opportunities that may arise.
