Folks, can we please learn to zipper merge? It'd make it go faster for all of us. Stop thinking you're the traffic police and blocking others from going all the way to the merge point before merging in.
Treat your sugar addiction like an alcohol addiction - This is easy to say but extremely difficult to implement when sugar is not just readily available but in fact it is encouraged and one is ridiculed for abstaining from it.
I am not a sugar addict but i experience this every other day at work and on social occasions.
I tell folks I don't consume sugar and they will go out of their way to make it accessible/force me to eat it. I have no idea what joy folks get out of this.
This is what happened at the office as they cut my customary bday cake. Now I took in my stride, but just pointing out how difficult it can be.
@UWECblugolds@UWEauClaire@uwectrack Big day on campus! 60 degrees! First track meet on campus in almost 2 decades! Come on out to Simpson Field Stadium for all the action! #rollgolds
I got called a “butter guzzler” this week. Let’s chat about #keto stigma.
I typically say, the hardest thing about a low-carb ketogenic diet is not the food but the social component. I won’t go in to the history, but I’m sure it’s apparent to anybody who’s ever tried to restrict dietary carbohydrates that there’s a stigma that comes with it. I think part of this is media driven /by a misunderstanding of the data, and part of it is sociologically driven – – a defensive posture, by a society addicted to refined carbohydrates and sugar.
I sometimes ask myself a question at what point did it become abnormal to not eat a doughnut & at what point did dietitians starts saying “normal people can eat pizza and milkshakes.” Yes, that’s the real quote.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think that there is intended malice. But I do think our norms are dysfunctional, and the fact that we emotionally invest in what other people eat – – especially without knowing their personal or medical background – – is problematic.
Taking myself as a case in point, when I hear “butter guzzler” I don’t get mad or upset because I’m at the point where it doesn’t really impact me. However, I do know that a ketogenic diet is the thing that solved my inflammatory bowel disease and other health issues and has vastly improved my quality of life. I worry about those others who could benefit, like me, but are discouraged, because of what I can only call ignorance.
Things are changing, and will continue to change, which is good. But for now I take my hats off for those of you brave enough to adopt a lifestyle that helps your health, and that society doesn’t entirely except. Be well. ✌️
