War correspondent Robert Fisk on how journalists sanitize war by keeping the most disturbing sights from public view, thereby making it easier for political leaders to convince the public to support the next war.
Palestinians in Gaza are celebrating the first day of Eid outside flattened mosques and among the rubble of their homes.
As Eid al-Fitr begins, we must rediscover something very simple: we are all human beings on one planet — and we all deserve to live in peace.
“Every single person in Gaza is hungry right now,” says @MichaelFakhri, the United Nations special rapporteur on the right to food. “We’ve never seen an entire population, 2.2 million people, made to go hungry this quickly and this completely."
30,000 killed. 1.8 million displaced. Thousands of children starving slowly to death. That is the collective punishment of the Palestinian people.
This is not the time for equivocation. This is the time for an immediate and permanent ceasefire.
The myth of western democracy.
Not only have all the major neoliberal powers moved to accelerate genocide in reaction to the ICJ ruling, by cutting off funding to UNRWA.
In each case the main "opposition" party actually supports this vicious move against starving people.
Incredible. The BBC just led their news with an 8 minute long segment on the unevidenced allegations of UNRWA staff involvement with Hamas.
Far greater coverage than they gave to the ICJ interim ruling that Israel is plausibly committing genocide.
The BBC is an utter disgrace.
I have rarely felt more ashamed of my country, both government and opposition, not just for tolerating but for actively enabling this daily mass-murder of terrified, trapped, unarmed civilians, shot down in cold blood because our politicians are either massively ignorant or actively hostile to the Palestinians and their cause. Shame on you @RishiSunak, @Keir_Starmer, @grantshapps & the rest of you who have so badly lost your moral bearings.
For those who continue to insist that reports about massive numbers of innocent Palestinians dying in Gaza -- especially young children -- are just the by-product of Hamas propaganda.
The US is paying for all of this. It's all done with bombs provided by the US Govt:
The final pretense that there exists a "rules-based order" collapsed with the decision of the governments of the US, France, and Germany to excuse a genocide rather than inconvenience an ally.
A mortifying spectacle that not even history will forgive.
Top Biden officials are compelled -- by self-interest -- to defend Israel's war in Gaza because they're the ones financing it, providing the weapons for it, diplomatically shielding it, and vowing that support is unconditional.
If Israel's war is criminal, then they're liable:
The simple belief in responsibility after death-that people will be held accountable for their deeds-for the way they exercised their freedom-that thought to me today seems to be the only real idea, the only thought that gives sense to this world.
South Africa institutes proceedings against the State of Israel before the International Court of Justice under the Genocide Convention and requests provisional measures
All Lives are Equal. Freedom is a Human right. I'm raising my voice for human rights. For a humanitarian appeal. If you see it any other way. That's on you...
