For years, advocates of state police argued that a centralized policing structure was struggling to meet the security needs of a vast and diverse country. Now that the House has moved on the proposal, attention should shift from politics to implementation.

Success will depend on recruitment standards, training, funding, oversight, intelligence sharing, and protections against political interference. Creating state police is the easy part; building trusted and effective state police institutions is the real test.
