Zcash's whole privacy layer runs on zero-knowledge proofs. In 1998, ten years before Bitcoin, Hal Finney and a guy literally named Satoshi were both presenting zero-knowledge research at the same crypto conference. Bitcoin launched without it. Zcash is the version that finished the job.
