tfw you’ve primarily been talking to someone in twitter dms for years and move to signal and suddenly you have fancy things like replying to a particular message
@theyfemme I guess it can be hard if you don’t actually respect user privacy and want to find a way to comply with GDPR while also fundamentally not wanting to
I've seen a lot of people asking "why does everyone think Twitter is doomed?"
As an SRE and sysadmin with 10+ years of industry experience, I wanted to write up a few scenarios that are real threats to the integrity of the bird site over the coming weeks.
Okay all of your final tweets made me finally realize why I love Twitter so much. It's kinda serious but bear with me for a sec. It's these two ideas that Samuel Delany calls contact vs. networking. I'll try to explain it in a quick thread.
Okay so while this site still works, I just realised there’s audio tweets so I can ask this:
These kind of hard drive sounds: Normal, or “probably replace your drive”?
The apocalypse wasn't as bad as you expected—blankets remained soft, and there were plenty of them; fire remained warm, and there was plenty of it; and more than anything, hiding from the vast monsters reminded you of childhood
So I feel like it's less "this site might disappear any moment" panic posting and more "it might not be possible to tweet for a while, let me post contact details while I still can" panic posting.
My suspicion is that Twitter won't just go poof and disappear into a puff of smoke. My guess is more that we're gonna have various outages, probably long ones as a good chunk of institutional knowledge is gone.
Whatever is left after that is probably going to feel like a bit of a ghost town. Some people will probably still remain here, posting, but it'll probably be a shadow of its former self?
