VIDEO | Mumbai: SBI Chairman C S Setty says the bank's total business could potentially reach Rs 200 lakh crore by 2030

State Bank of India Chairman C S Setty says the bank's total business could potentially reach Rs 170-180 lakh crore, and possibly Rs 200 lakh crore, by 2030, based on its current growth trajectory.

SBI's total business stood at Rs 110.01 lakh crore at the end of June 2026, after crossing the Rs 100 lakh crore mark in the second quarter of the previous financial year. Setty says that if the Indian economy grows at 7-8 per cent annually, SBI's balance sheet has the potential to expand by around 11-12 per cent each year.

He says there is no formal milestone set for 2030, but reaching Rs 200 lakh crore in total business would be an important milestone for the bank as it celebrates its platinum jubilee.

SBI, which came into existence on July 1, 1955, will complete 75 years in 2030.

Setty says SBI's Vision 2030 focuses on four key stakeholders - customers, employees, shareholders, and the government and regulators, including the Reserve Bank of India. He says the bank aims to improve customer experience, simplify processes for employees, create value for shareholders and continue supporting India's economic growth.

He adds that SBI aims to maintain its Common Equity Tier 1 capital ratio at around 12 per cent and capital to risk-weighted assets ratio at around 15 per cent through economic cycles, while focusing on efficiency and productivity gains to improve its cost-to-income ratio by around 2-3 percentage points.

In defense of Indian 🇮🇳 democracy!

During Prime Minister Narendra Modi most successful visit to Norway a minor incident happened. A Norwegian journalist demanded that the prime minister starts holding press conferences. She claimed that Indian democracy is in bad shape.

May be its time to pause? May be its time to be a bit curious to the world’s largest democracy?

Two weeks ago five Indian states and territories held elections. The turn out in the battlefield state of West Bengal was 94%. In the last local election in Norway it was 62%, in many European local elections turn out is below 50%. Can voting in massive numbers be a signal Indians trust their democratic process?

In the same election BJP won big in Assam and West Bengal. It lost even bigger in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Can this diversity be a signal that Indian democracy is reflecting the will of the people?

The journalist referred to a democracy ranking putting India at 157 in the world, behind many dictatorships and deeply troubled states. When a ranking is so obviously contrary to common sense, why not ask critical questions to those making the ranking rather than demand that leaders shall comment on nonsense? I recommend Salvatore Babones book “Dharma democracy”. The book debunks convincingly the flawed methodology of these rankings.

It was referred to a ranking claiming it’s very dangerous to be a journalist in India. Reality is that it is more dangerous to be journalist in the US and far more dangerous in the vast majority of other nations in the world.

Let’s be real. India is not perfect. Of course there are incidents. India has a population the size of North America, South America and Europe combined. But India is much more peaceful than Europe or the Americas. That’s remarkable - given the ethnic, language and religious diversity of India and the many development challenges.

Unless we consider democracy a form of government only suited for some very small, peaceful and homogeneous Western European nations, may be we should commend Indian democracy?

India is the only major former UK colony which became and has remained a democracy. Its sometimes claimed that the Brits taught India democracy. If that was the case why isn’t Myanmar or Pakistan or the Gulf kingdoms democracies??? Reality is that Indian democracy is both homegrown and extraordinary successful.

Dear brothers and sisters from Bharat:

Like I did 37 years ago, you arrived in America with no money but with a good education and cultural heritage from Bharat. You achieved outstanding success. America was good to us. For that we must remain grateful - gratitude is our Bharatiya way.

Yet today, a significant number of Americans, may be not the majority but not too far from it either, believe that Indians "take away" American jobs and our success in America was unfairly earned.

You may think the next election will fix this, but your choice would be between people who hate our Bharatiya civilisation and people who hate civilisation itself. That is the "hard right" vs "woke left" battle. You are mere bystanders to that conflict.

Meanwhile there is one thing that is true now and will be true in the future: the respect Indians command world-wide will substantially depend on the fortunes of India herself. If India remains poor, the woke left will give us moral lectures with pity and the hard right, different moral lectures with scorn ("hellhole") and we must not confuse either with respect.

Respect in today's world, along with prosperity and security, comes from one source: a nation's technological prowess. India produces sufficient brain power to achieve that prowess but alas we exported so much of that talent, particularly to America. As we develop that prowess in India, our civilisational strength will assert itself.

As difficult as it is for many of you to contemplate this, please come back home. Bharat Mata needs your talent. Our vast youthful population needs the technology leadership you gained over the years to guide them towards prosperity. Let's do it with a missionary zeal.

A Chinese monk once walked from China to India. It took him eight years, crossing deserts and mountain ranges, just to attend a university. When he finally arrived, the gatekeepers rejected 7 out of every 10 people who showed up.

His name was Xuanzang, and the university was Nalanda. He left China in 629 CE and reached the gate in 637. If he hadn't written the journey down in a book, we'd dismiss the story as a legend today.

Nalanda had been operating for over 200 years by the time Xuanzang walked through the gate. An Indian king named Kumaragupta I founded it around 427 CE, back when most of Europe was still picking up the pieces after Rome fell. Oxford would not start teaching for another 669 years. Bologna, Europe's oldest university, would not open until 1088.

At its peak, the campus held 10,000 students and 2,000 teachers. That works out to five students per teacher, a ratio most modern universities can't hit even today. Students came from China, Korea, Tibet, Japan, Persia, Turkey, and Indonesia. Tuition cost nothing. The king had assigned entire villages to Nalanda, and the produce and rent from those villages paid for everything.

Students studied medicine (what we now call Ayurveda), math, astronomy, logic, grammar, metalworking, politics, and the art of war. This was a Buddhist monastery with a course on military strategy. Aryabhata, the mathematician who first proposed that the earth spins on its own axis around the year 499, may have led Nalanda in the 6th century.

The library was its own complex of three separate buildings. One of them stood nine stories tall. Tibetan records estimate it held around 9 million manuscripts, every single one copied by hand. They had no printing press, no mass-produced paper, nothing but ink, dried palm leaves, and monks who copied texts for decades on end.

The end came in 1193 CE. An invading army led by Bakhtiyar Khilji rode in, killed thousands of monks, and set the library on fire. The fires burned for three months. A Persian historian wrote that smoke hung over the hills like a dark cloud for days. Centuries of work in medicine, math, and astronomy went with it. Most of it was unique to Nalanda and gone forever.

The ruins sat forgotten for 619 years. In 1812, a Scottish surveyor named Francis Buchanan-Hamilton came upon them while mapping the region. He had no idea what he'd stumbled onto. Another 50 years passed before anyone identified the site as Nalanda. UNESCO made it a World Heritage site in 2016. The new Nalanda University opened on nearby land in 2014, and its 485-acre net-zero campus was formally inaugurated in June 2024.

The original Nalanda operated for 766 years before Khilji shut it down. Harvard, for scale, is 390 years old. If Nalanda had survived, it would be turning 1,600 next year.

How long do you think HDFC Bank will take to transfer the money from your account to your nominee's after you die? Public sector banks get a bad rap, but it's been more than a year and we have not been able to get funds transferred from my now deceased husband's account in the country's largest private bank.
The nominee is our adult daughter, there are no conflicting claims, the paperwork is clear, and yet for more than a year now HDFC has been giving us the run around. Get this paper, get that paper. Each time my daughter comes home for holidays, we have to take 2 days out to go and wait at the bank branch. Today, more than a year after the first application, they said
a) we can't find the paperwork including the death certificate you submitted because the employee you submitted to is not here
b) you have to get a stamp paper and notarise it for the auto debits that hit his account between the date of his death and the date the account was frozen (on the basis of the paperwork in point a, now non-traceable)
c) you have to get HDFC Standard life to sign off because there is an auto debit for an investment from his account. (ME: they are the payee, he is the payer, why does the payee need to approve stopping a standing instruction? Bank: Hamare main aise hi hai). If you wait for 30 minutes, we'll get you the form.
d) after 30 minutes. Sorry, we can't get the form, you have to go to their office and do it.
By now it is 2.45 PM, HDFC Standard life office is at least 35 minutes away. They are open only till 3.30 PM. We are not sure we'll make it there on time. I call their number to ask if the branch is open tomorrow. Person: Sorry, I can't give you the information today, you will have to call and check tomorrow. (To repeat: HDFC Standard Life's call centre cannot tell you if a branch is working or not the following day)
In all, we have spent many hours over many months trying to get this money in a case the bank officials themselves say "should not be complicated". What is worse is for my 20-year-old daughter to relive the trauma of losing her father each time we have to go and explain the case. Just today, we had to speak to three different people and start the story from the beginning. This is not just the bank's inefficiency, it is its utter callousness. (My husband also had money in Indusind Bank. It took one visit and two weeks for that to be transferred).
The other, more important point, is that I have a job, we have the money to continue to pay for our needs without having to immediately access these funds. But I am certain that is not the case for many others. What about them? How can this be the system of a bank whose customers are dependent on it for giving them access to their own money?! It beggars belief.

Why should a RAC passenger bear full charge for 50% of a side lower seat? Isn't it unfair?

Once the chart is prepared, Railways must refund 50% of the fare with interest for RAC passengers. The same source of payment can be used for the refund.

Pls implement this immediately. I see many ladies and senior citizens who travel by RAC, without sleep and they pay full charge.

If any of you reading this feel that this should be implemented immediately, comment with your thoughts and share until Railways makes it a fair deal for passengers.

This is long long overdue.
