BTS the Arirang - an essay why BTS comeback name is genius, and one of the most iconic titles in music history

Arirang represents timeless music. It's ancient, and through centuries has been updated with new instruments, new variations. Continuously renewed with modern interpretations of next generations.

It's also universal; it has thousands of variations across different regions, and yet all with a shared rythm every Korean can recognize - encouraging participation and togetherness. Arirang is considered as much the cultural anthem to North Korea.

BTS chosing it as the name can represent not only timeless music, but also the message of unity with preserved individuality. Different that can be one. Similar messages BTS included for example in Paldogangsan (satoori rap), and notice - the album also has member versions.

Arirang is the heart of the Korean culture. It's widely considered the unofficial anthem of Koreans. The one creation with incomparable impact on the entire nation and culture. BTS chosing it is such a powerful emphasis on their identity. Who they are, where they came from, how their beginning and now remain unchanging. It relates to how bts paved the way and Korean cultural experts describe what they brought and still bring to Korean culture and history as unparalleled and historic. Cultural experts and professors from Korea many times stated BTS as the most impactful to Korean culture among the people like the Korean king who invented hangul.

Paired with album version names - rooted in music, rooted in Korea, and also living legend... BTS is also expressing their pride in what they achieved for Korean music and the impact they made.

Then, there is even more history behind it. Arirang for the first time in history was recorded... by 7 Koreans in the US. 7 Koreans carrying across the world this soul of Korea, doing something that was never done before. BTS possibly knows this story. This mindblowing parallel could be BTS expressing that they believe it was their destiny. It was supposed to be 7 Koreans recording together. It was their fate, because nobody else is BTS and armys, nobody else can be us than ourselves - another message prevalent in BTS' music.

Arirang is a core folklore so old that its original meaning is debated, but it losely means "the beloved one". It symbolizes joy, resilience, surviving, longing, separation, hardship and hope... Not only the values and messages BTS spread with their music, but also... Wouldn't it be the perfect symbol of reunion of BTS and between BTS & ARMY after the military years.

And the way they chose it also for the tour name... BTS will be touring all over the world under the banner of Arirang, representing everything mentioned above and more.

It carries even more direct messages. BTS is showing that they are feeling stronger and more confident in their artist identity than ever before. They are bloodily rebounding accusations that they lost themselves, and speculations that after returning their music and art direction would be undecided and muddled.

And last but not least - Arirang is universal, it's not something BTS could claim. BTS chosing it could show how they see themselves as a part of the torrent of Korean culture. A torrent that has been flowing since before them and will continue after them. It's such a clever way to show their immense humility, to show pride without hubris. They embrace their cultural status and impact, while bowing head to Korean culture that raised them.

So all in all...

Arirang represents BTS. It represents their Korean identity and their global impact, their pride and their humility, their past and their future, who they are and what is their artistic mission, celebrates their global success as Koreans that nobody else could've achieved and yet emphasise they see themselves first and most as torchbearers of Korean culture.

Keep in mind, this is just the surface. We will probably keep finding out more to it along the way.

Hello, this is BTS's Suga.
First, I'd like to sincerely congratulate the opening of the Min Yoongi Treatment Center. I'm so happy that a dedicated space has been established for social therapy through music.
I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the director, director of the children's hospital, Professor Cheon Geun-ah, the therapists, and all the staff, including the ensemble, who worked hard for this opening. With the construction of the new children's ward, we will be transformed into an even more spacious and excellent facility.
Until then, I hope this space will be the starting point of a great step forward, a small hope that demonstrates the power of music. Thank you.
