The Women in Diplomacy Programme officially commenced today at the Foreign Service Academy, bringing together diplomats, development partners, and emerging women leaders to explore pathways for strengthening women's participation and leadership in diplomacy and international affairs.
Speaking during the opening session, Principal Secretary for Foreign Affairs, @SingoeiAKorir emphasized the vital role women play in shaping diplomacy, peacebuilding, sustainable development, and global governance. He noted that women bring unique perspectives and a deep understanding of societal needs, making them indispensable in addressing complex global challenges.
Drawing from historical and contemporary examples, he highlighted the contribution of women leaders such as Eleanor Roosevelt in the development of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, as well as the achievements of Kenyan women recognized for their contributions to agriculture and food security.
The Principal Secretary underscored the importance of inclusive representation of women in decision-making spaces, noting that diplomacy is stronger and more effective when diverse voices are included. He further reaffirmed the State Department’s commitment to support women through mentorship, capacity-building initiatives, leadership development programmes, and opportunities for international exposure.
Echoing these sentiments, Ms. Antonio N'Gabala-Sodonon, Country Representative, UN Women Kenya, emphasized that while Kenya has established a strong constitutional and policy framework for gender equality, greater efforts are needed to translate these commitments into equal representation.
She highlighted mentorship, professional networks, technical expertise, and institutional support as critical enablers of women's leadership and encouraged participants to pursue their ambitions boldly while supporting future generations of women leaders.
Both speakers underscored the growing importance of women's leadership in addressing emerging global challenges, including peace and security, climate action, trade, migration, artificial intelligence, and sustainable development. They further reaffirmed the importance of partnerships and collective action in creating pathways for women to contribute meaningfully to diplomacy and global governance, while acknowledging the valuable partnership of UN Women Kenya and Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Kenya in convening the programme. #InternationalDayOfWomenInDiplomacy,
