@NvOndarza@POLITICOEurope During the Covid-19 pandemic, the European Commission approved over
€2.3 trillion of German State aid measures as not being unduly distortive of the Single Market.
Yet the EU Foreign Subsidies Regulation regards awards of €4.1m, from outside the EU, as potentially distortive!
Striking figures in today`s @POLITICOEurope playbook on EU state aid since the pandemic, with Germany accounting for 53% and France for 24%, with just 23% for all other 25 member states.
Remember: This asymetry was a core argument for the joint borrowing in the EU recovery fund.
The new Prime Minister is likely to authorise an enormous programme of subsidies to tackle the #EnergyCrisis.
In this article, @Jon_Branton and I assess whether the UK’s new Subsidy Control regime is up to the challenge and likely sticking points. https://t.co/blUsyyciWN

The House of Lords debates the Subsidy Control Bill on 19th January 2022, but without a complete picture of how it will work.
The Government should set out what kinds of subsidies will need to be referred to the @CMAgovUK or otherwise prohibited, before the Bill is debated.

It’s worth keeping an eye on the EU’s Foreign Subsidy Regulation - this will create new, wide powers for DG Competition to tackle perceived loopholes in how subsidies from outside the EU impact the Single Market.
The EU Foreign Subsidies regime will have a significant impact on the way public funding is awarded in non-EU countries, including the UK.

Under the Subsidy Control Bill there can be a six month gap between an unlawful subsidy being announced and it being capable of being challenged.
That’s not good law - competitors could be driven out of business before the challenge period starts. https://t.co/i3AAYf8xwc
The EU’s new ‘Foreign Subsidy regime’ will create a power for the European Commission to investigate and take action against subsidies that distort the Single Market.
It’s primarily aimed at countries like China and Russia, but could apply to public funding within the UK too.
