Four years ago British farmers were burning the fibre that built this country. Standing in the yard on a summer evening, watching a season's fleeces go up in smoke, because it cost more to send them away than they would ever bring back.
Wool paid for England. It was the crown's great tax and the merchant's fortune, and it raised the wool churches of the Cotswolds, cathedrals in villages that had no business affording a cathedral. Whoever presides over the House of Lords still sits on the Woolsack, a cushion of wool set there in the fourteenth century so nobody in that room would forget where the money came from.
By 2020 a fleece off a mountain ewe fetched around thirty pence.
Shearing that ewe cost two pounds. A Lincolnshire farmer sat down and did the sums properly: over three pounds to shear the animal and cart the fleece to the depot, twenty-six pence back. So she burned them. Others buried them, or left them heaped in a corner of a field to rot down over the winter.
And the shearing carried on anyway. It always does. A ewe left in full fleece overheats, cannot move properly, and gets eaten alive by maggots, so the job happens every year whatever the world thinks the wool is worth. For the best part of a decade it was pure welfare cost, paid out of the farmer's own pocket, the fleece going on the fire the same afternoon it came off the animal.
Think about what we were doing that to.
A fibre that grows back every year, on grass, on ground too steep and too wet to grow anything a human can eat. It breathes, it insulates wet or dry, it resists fire, it lasts decades and then rots back into the soil it came from. We spent twenty years replacing it with polypropylene, made from crude oil, through an era that would not stop talking about sustainability.
Then global sheep numbers fell, New Zealand cleared its covid backlog, supply went tight, and the price came back. Auctions this summer are the strongest since 2015 and returns are up around seventy per cent in a year.
Here is what the farming press is celebrating.
Shearing costs £1.93 a head. A typical fleece now brings a bit over three pounds.
For the first time in years, taking the wool off a sheep roughly pays for taking the wool off a sheep.
Nobody chose to save it. It simply became scarce enough to be worth something again.
Oh dear @zannymb, let's take it from the top. No Muslim ☪️ country conforms to western levels of democracy. They are de facto fascist.
White Britons will in 2060 will be a minority in their own country.
Of 205 British victims of terrorism since 2000, all bar 3 were committed by Muslims.
@RupertLowe10's Inquiry concluded 250,000 victims of grooming gangs. Based on the Rotherham data Grok estimated 348,000 victims.
But of course being so called far-right is infinitely worse than being the victim of terrorism and a grooming gang 🙄
Georgia ranked 137th in the world for ease of doing business.
3 years later it was 11th and had overtaken Germany and France, while everyone was still calling it a failed post-Soviet state.
A businessman named Kakha Bendukidze took the economy ministry after the Rose Revolution in 2003 and tore the system apart.
He cut the tax code from 21 taxes to 6, slammed in a flat 12% income tax, and wiped out most of the licenses and permits choking every business.
Then he fired the entire corrupt traffic police overnight and built a new force from scratch.
GDP grew 7.5% a year and foreign investment went from almost nothing to $2.1 billion.
No country has ever climbed the rankings that fast.
Back in clown world, Western governments keep adding rules and agencies while growth stalls because real reform would destroy the parasites they protect.
good clip below - bottom line is that there is no economic case at any level for independence and this is a key reason why there is no plan - isnt that right @JohnSwinney and all you useless SNP muppets …🙈
The @smithsonian is being accused of pushing a "revolting" training years after apologizing for a similar chart on "whiteness."
Heritage Foundation senior fellow Mike Gonzalez testified that the Smithsonian continued "indoctrinating staff" through its "Museums as Sites for Social Action" toolkit years after apologizing for the "whiteness" chart, arguing the materials portrayed traits such as objectivity, individualism and perfectionism as characteristics of white supremacy.
Smithsonian officials disputed that they were promoting any ideology.
A USA Today columnist is apologizing after invoking Emmett Till in a column about Caitlin Clark.
Nancy Armour wrote that Clark's reactions to missed calls put Black and queer WNBA players "in danger," then referenced the lynching of Emmett Till in the same argument.
Now Armour says the comparison was "inartful" and lacked context. The backlash is coming from across the political spectrum, with critics arguing the analogy trivialized one of the darkest chapters in American history.
