@CharlotteA15906@CaitlinPacific Because the other kids will be lost, including the more math-gifted types, and be honest, reading is more fun and ultimately more educational for verbally gifted types anyway.
@constans@dilanesper The criteria for eligibility for gifted programs and services varies widely by state and district, and how gifted services are delivered varies hugely even within the one district my kids attend, so of course it's a subject about which people feel rather passionate.
@constans@dilanesper Well that's one definition and not a terrible one, but we have 50 states and thousands of school districts, and there's not a single coherent definition for what constitutes "giftedness" among them.
@CyberpunkPlato@CartoonsHateHer I am aware of this on one level but also can't entirely relate to it myself. I guess we all have some failures of imagination. I mean, I was raised in a fundamentalist community and never quite understood homophobia either, even when I was a young kid.
@Aella_Girl IRBs I can speak to a bit, and unfortunately, it's very not a "pick up the phone and hash it out with them" kind of vibe. (Some IRBs are fine and some are kind of insane, as per https://t.co/mRKIbB4kmz.)
@marcportermagee You seem to value the importance of in-person education; of course a school-based figure who isn't mom or dad (especially when mom and dad aren't readers) whose role is to connect kids with books they might like might help move the needle sometimes.
@marcportermagee I don't know that it's entirely wrong. My kids are readers in general, but my daughter went to the next level because of encouragement to read more broadly from an ELA teacher around 4th grade, also avidly participated in a library lunch club this past year (6th).
@Romy_Holland@drethelin@datingbyblaine I think she said she changes identifying details, but I think people secretly like recognizing themselves, even for outrageous behavior.
Like maybe instead of facial features it was bra size or waist/hip ratio, IDK.
@Aella_Girl@Tyler_A_Harper Lol, I have had the "just publish a paper conversation," and yeah ... they mean it nicely I think.
I guess it's hard for all of us to speak outside of our silos, to use a term much abused in academia. (Maybe bc admins are always saying departments have to stop working in silos.)
@CaitlinPacific IDK Disney has its moments, especially the patriotic parts of Disney World (and maybe Disney Land, but I've only been to the former). I mean, the Hall of Presidents is so earnest and cringe but also: excellent intro to civics for the K-5 set.
@Tyler_A_Harper I find all of this confusing as a non academic and non coder and wish someone would explain it! Is it bc vibecoding would not be an accurate way to analyze data or something?
@brecht_dp Because it seemed like a more plausible technological future, or at least it did to me. I read it not long after it came out and revisited it recently, still think it's great but the premise seemed totally fantastic in a way it didn't 20 years ago.
