Did you watch Whiz Kids?
On this day in 1983 (5 October 1983), CBS premiered Whiz Kids—four teens (Richie, Ham, Jeremy, and Alice) who used a computer called Ralf, to crack cases with reporter Llewellen Farley. This show was FUN!
This is the TV series that made me want to be a hacker on my Commodore 64... but that's a story for another day 😁
Who else loved watching the Whiz Kids adventures on TV?
She was 22. Two days from her birthday. She opened the exit and stayed.
On September 5, 1986, Pan Am Flight 73 sat on the ground in Karachi with 379 people aboard. Four armed hijackers from the Abu Nidal Organization stormed the Boeing 747.
Neerja Bhanot, the senior flight attendant, alerted the cockpit. The pilots escaped through an emergency hatch. Without them, the plane could not be flown away.
For about 17 hours she and the crew kept passengers calm, brought water, and hid American passports so the hijackers could not single people out by nationality.
When the lights failed and the gunmen opened fire, she reached an emergency door. She could have gone first. She opened it and kept helping people out until she was shot from behind. Accounts say she shielded children with her body.
She died at 22. Of 379 on board, 359 survived.
India later gave her the Ashoka Chakra, its highest peacetime award for bravery — the first woman, and then the youngest recipient. A stamp followed. Then a film.
The part that stays is simpler: an open door, and someone who did not take it first. 🌹
One of my favorite moments in Hocus Pocus is the cameo from comedy legend, Penny Marshall along with her brother, Garry Marshall.
Ps it's so cute that Ralph was played by Kathy Najimy's dog!
