🏘️ A HOUSED CITY PUTS PEOPLE BEFORE PROFIT.

Public land should serve the public, not be sold off while thousands of people struggle to find an affordable place to call home. GOOD’s 2026 Manifesto calls for a different approach to housing, one that prioritises people’s needs over property interests.

We believe public land should be used to create affordable housing, rather than sold to private developers for profit. This includes vacant municipal land, underused public properties and well-located land that could help bring people closer to jobs, transport and essential services.

Housing is not a handout. It’s about dignity, spatial justice and building a city where everyone has a place to call home. 🧡

🏙️ A WORKING CITY CREATES OPPORTUNITIES LOCALLY.

GOOD’s Working City pledge is about making local government work for the people it serves. Instead of relying heavily on outsourcing, we want to bring more work and job opportunities back into communities, creating pathways for residents to earn a living and contribute to their neighbourhoods.

Our proposal includes employing local park attendants to help care for public parks and community spaces, keeping these areas clean, maintained and welcoming. By creating local jobs around the upkeep of public spaces, the City can support livelihoods while strengthening community pride and accountability.

We also want to reduce unnecessary outsourcing, allowing the City to build its own capacity and keep more employment opportunities within local communities.

A Working City means more than maintaining public spaces. It means creating work, supporting local livelihoods and ensuring our communities benefit from the services they help fund. 🧡

In Blackheath, GOOD Mayoral Candidate Brett Herron questioned why housing funds are going unspent while families remain overcrowded in homes, live in backyards and shacks, and continue waiting for decent housing.

The Housed City pledge calls for urgent action to address Cape Town’s housing crisis by using available housing budgets effectively, building affordable, rent-stabilised homes on public land, upgrading informal settlements and turning hostels into family homes. Money allocated for housing must translate into homes for the people who need them, not return to the National Treasury while families remain without adequate shelter.

Housing budgets must deliver homes, not unfulfilled promises.

In New Tafelsig, GOOD Mayoral Candidate Brett Herron called for equal standards across Cape Town’s roads, pavements and parks, while demanding meaningful public consultation and accountability from the City.

GOOD’s One Standard City pledge calls for equitable infrastructure and public spaces across all communities, while A City With A Say commits to a municipality where residents are heard, ward councillors are responsive, and public participation has real influence. Communities must have meaningful ways to raise concerns, submit petitions and hold decision-makers accountable, not be consulted after decisions have already been made.

No family should have to choose between putting food on the table and keeping the lights on. Rising electricity tariffs, transport costs and stagnant wages continue to squeeze household budgets, while millions face hunger. RISE Mzansi is calling for practical interventions that make nutritious food accessible and protect the most vulnerable.

GOOD Mayoral Candidate Brett Herron joined by Ward 56 Candidate, Ingrid Simons in Factreton to engage residents on the housing backlog and the need for clear feedback on housing delivery. Communities cannot continue waiting for decent homes without answers about when their circumstances will change.

GOOD’s A Housed City pledge calls for City-owned, rent-stabilised homes on public land, upgrading informal settlements and turning hostels into family homes. Cape Town must use its public land and housing resources to address the crisis, restore dignity and ensure that residents are not left behind.

[GOOD @ForGoodZA]

GOOD Mayoral Candidate Brett Herron highlighted how rising living costs and the City’s electricity tariff structure are making Cape Town unaffordable and limiting residents’ access to basic services.

An Affordable City pledge is about changing this. GOOD proposes income-adjusted rates, raising the rates relief threshold above R7,500 per month, protecting prepaid electricity users through a review of the City’s Credit Control Policy, and providing free off-peak bus and train travel. These measures form part of a broader vision for One Standard City, a Cape Town where access to basic services and the opportunity to live with dignity are not determined by which community you come from or what you earn.

A city that works for everyone must also be a city that people can afford.

Electricity should be affordable, not another burden on households. 🧡⚡

Through our A More Affordable City pledge, GOOD wants to tackle the rising cost of living and make electricity more affordable for residents. With electricity tariffs putting increasing pressure on household budgets, residents deserve fairer prices and relief from the cost of keeping their lights on.

One Standard for Every Street, Every Suburb and Every Community.

[GOOD @ForGoodZA]

Brett Herron outlined GOOD’s vision for Cape Town at the Radio 786 Town Hall Debate in Factreton, addressing the deep inequalities in infrastructure, services and quality of life between communities shaped by apartheid-era investment and underdevelopment.

GOOD’s six pledges set out a plan to build one city in solidarity: an Affordable City where residents can afford to live, a Housed City that tackles the housing crisis, a Working City that creates opportunities beyond call centres, an Equitable City with equal standards of services and amenities, a Safer City that addresses the root causes of crime, and a Trusted City that gives communities a meaningful say in local decisions.

Cape Town deserves better.

Many of South Africa’s biggest challenges start locally, and that’s where real change must begin. 🧡

GOOD’s six pledges focus on an Affordable City, Housed City, Equitable City, Safer City, Trusted City and Working City. From tackling the housing crisis and the cost of living to improving safety, delivering reliable services, creating economic opportunities and building accountable government, every pledge aims to improve people’s everyday lives.

GOOD wants one standard across the city, where every community receives the same dignity, opportunities and quality of service. That must also be the standard we strive for across the country. Change starts locally, but its impact can be national.
