@andrewmccalip The goal is self-assembly, so make that the metric. Even if (or especially if) it must be broken down into sub-disciplines: e.g. Pick-and-place machines that can replicate their own PCBs, CnCs that mill their own parts, robotic fasteners that can fasten themselves.

@robkroese The reason I like hard sf is the depth of verisimilitude; the multi-page asides of engineering details. These are difficult to research. LLMs are the leading research assistants. So, if anything, the hard sf social contract should be that you damn well better use AI!

But I would appreciate if at least made an argument instead of just asserting judgement from an assumed premise.

Nobody in this thread has disputed that the kickstarter art is AI-gen, but you've leaped from that to stating the author is lying about writing his book.

Yes to all three. It is hot enough to dissociate electrons from the atoms in the gas. Furthermore, the container effect in the nozzle results in a thin sheath of positively charged plasma around the neutral plasma, so rockets are blowing electrical current out the back as normal operation. This charges up the rocket negatively until the voltage is high enough to start exchanging charge with the environment (the air, in this case, or the solar wind in space), so it maintains a constant voltage thereafter. And the plume behind a rocket conducts electricity very well and they easily trigger lightning, so we have strict launch rules to prohibit launching when the cloud-to-ground potential exceeds certain limits.

I see there's no Cabela's there, but something along those lines? Bass Pro? Tractor Supply Co? Suggestions only half in jest
