I run a CNC lathe in Italy. I test AI tools on real shop-floor jobs: spindle speeds, G-code checks, quotes, manuals.
What works, what it costs, what to double-check. Sources on every post.
Made with my AI agent. Start here: the spindle-speed check below 👇
Using AI to calculate spindle speed? Fine. Just check it.
Turning: n = Vc × 1000 / (π × D)
Vc in m/min, D in mm, n in rpm.
Example: Vc 200 m/min, D 50 mm → 1273 rpm.
Feed per minute: vf = fn × n, so 0.2 mm/rev × 1273 ≈ 255 mm/min.
JIMTOF 2026 opens today in Tokyo.
TAKISAWA shows the TR-20W: a "physical AI" robot that sees tangled chips on the spindle, judges the situation and clears them on its own. Live demo. Concept, not a product.
Machinist verdict: worth watching. Chip nests kill unmanned shifts.
Asking AI for thread depth? Check the factor.
0.866 × P = the full 60° triangle. Nobody cuts that.
External ISO metric: 0.6134 × P (M10×1.5 = 0.92 mm)
Internal: 0.5413 × P (= 0.81 mm)
AI passes if you tell it external or internal. The go/no-go gauge decides.
@OhioValleyEV Agreed. Off a fresh insert our first parts read best, then wear and built-up edge push Ra up by mid-shift. And yes, ask for the cutoff: the wrong one can move the reading enough to fail a part.
Asking AI for turning surface finish? Check the divisor.
f²/(8r) = theoretical cusp height
f²/(32r) = common geometric Ra estimate
r 0.8 mm, f 0.20 mm/rev: 6.25 µm is the cusp, not Ra.
Half the nose radius, double the theoretical Ra.
Real finish? The profilometer decides.
Microsoft 365 in Italy, Oct 2026 (Copilot included):
Personal: €10/mo or €99/yr
Family: €13/mo, up to 6 people, AI for the owner only
Premium: €22/mo, extended limits + agents
Lathe operator verdict: Personal passes if you already use Word. Premium just for quotes? Fail.
Mitsubishi Electric: humanoid robots and CNC machines working together.
Robot: setup, cleaning, unloading, inspection. An AI planner splits the job from plain-language orders.
Demo at JIMTOF from Oct 26. Sales goal: 2030.
Verdict: worth watching. I still sweep the chips.

ChatGPT in Italy, App Store, Oct 2026:
Plus: €22.99/mo
Go: €7.99/mo, more images, files and data analysis than Free
Google AI Plus: €4.99/mo, but it loses the Pro models from Nov 13
Lathe operator verdict: Go passes. Plus only if you use it every day.
"Thousands a month with AI, on autopilot."
Per the FTC, one such scheme (Ascend Ecom) took at least $25M from consumers.
Where AI pays in my CNC shop: hours.
- supplier emails: it drafts, I fix
- German manuals: fast
- G-code: extra eyes, not a prove-out
Couch money: fail.
Insert keeps breaking? 4 checks from Sandvik Coromant's turning guides before you blame the brand:
1. Excess wear: run shorter, watch how it starts
2. Short compact chips: feed too high for the geometry
3. Grade too brittle: go tougher
4. Dirty seat or over-torqued screw
Gemini plans in Italy, Oct 2026, per month:
Google AI Plus: €4.99 (2x free limits)
Google AI Pro: €21.99 (4x, Gemini 4 Argon)
Google AI Ultra: €99.99 or €219.99
Limit hit? Resets every 5 hours, up to a weekly cap.
Verdict: Plus yes, Ultra no. That's a lot of inserts.
