INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE: NIGERIA REQUIRES MORE THAN THE END OF CONFLICT

As the world observes the International Day of Peace, Nigeria must acknowledge a difficult truth: enduring peace cannot be achieved while citizens continue to face insecurity, hunger, poverty, and despair.

Peace means more than the absence of violence. It exists when farmers can travel safely to and from their fields, children can attend school without the threat of abduction, families can afford adequate food, and young people can envision a future in their own country.

For this reason, peace must be grounded in effective governance. Governments must safeguard lives, ensure justice, combat corruption, invest in education and healthcare, expand productive opportunities, and manage national resources responsibly.

We cannot continue addressing only the visible effects of insecurity while neglecting the circumstances that generate desperation and instability.

Every naira misused represents a lost opportunity to strengthen peace. Every citizen left without support reflects a crisis overlooked. Every injustice committed erodes the foundations of peace.

Nigeria possesses the resources necessary to become a secure, peaceful, and prosperous nation. What is required is leadership, accountability, and the political will to place the Nigerian people at the centre of governance.

On this International Day of Peace, let us pledge to build a Nigeria in which justice is upheld, lives are protected, opportunities are expanded, and every citizen can live with dignity and hope.

Responsible governance is the foundation of peace.

I have watched Yusuf Aliyu’s video repeatedly, and each time, my heart breaks.

A child with such intelligence, clarity and confidence should be in a classroom building his future—not struggling for survival in a community surrounded by gold but buried in poverty.

I cannot look at him and see an “illegal miner.” I see a Nigerian child failed by the country that should have protected him. I see brilliance trapped by poverty and enormous promise abandoned by leadership.

I appeal specifically for his safety. His courage must not expose him or his family to intimidation or retaliation. I am prepared to support his education and ensure that the brilliance we have witnessed is not buried by poverty. Any effort to reach him must be handled responsibly through his family and appropriate child-protection channels.

But this video raises a question that should trouble the conscience of every Nigerian: how can a community sitting upon gold remain so poor that it cannot educate its children? How can its wealth leave the soil while hunger and deprivation remain in its homes?

This is an indictment of the Tinubu administration. The Federal Government controls Nigeria’s mineral resources, yet the communities producing that wealth remain without schools, opportunities or protection.

The contrast is revealing. President Buhari established PAGMI to register, train and integrate artisanal miners into the formal economy, with Niger State included among its intervention states. Tinubu inherited that framework but has met these vulnerable citizens with raids, detention and the label “illegal miners.”

Buhari saw people to formalise. Tinubu sees poor people to criminalise.

This boy is evidence against the Tinubu government. His intelligence exposes the opportunities it has failed to provide. His poverty exposes the injustice of Nigeria’s mining economy. His presence at that site exposes an administration that has left brilliant children without a ladder out of deprivation.

The government must explain what became of PAGMI in Niger State and how 37 Nigerians died in the custody of a federal agency. Calling them “illegal miners” cannot erase their humanity or excuse their deaths.

As a father, a grandfather and a Nigerian, I refuse to look away. I will continue to speak for these children because their lives matter, their dreams matter and their future belongs to Nigeria.

The gold beneath their community should build classrooms and livelihoods, not graves. —AA

Today, I joined our presidential candidate, His Excellency Peter Obi, alongside other NDC candidates and party members at the Obi–Kwankwaso Town Hall Meeting in Kaduna.

I arrived in Abuja from London this morning, thanks to Air Peace Airlines, whose flight arrived 20 minutes ahead of schedule. From Abuja, I proceeded immediately to Kaduna.

Upon my arrival, I visited the Sheikh Muhammad Sambo Memorial Islamic Institute, Rigachikun, Kaduna State, an institution I had visited twice in the past and supported in my little way.

I was very impressed by the level of progress the institution has made, particularly its approach to blending Islamic education with STEM subjects. This is the kind of holistic education that can equip our young people with both strong values and the knowledge and skills required to thrive in today’s world.

My commitment remains to investing in education and healthcare, developing our human capital, creating opportunities, and lifting our people out of poverty. Every Nigerian, regardless of religion, ethnicity, region, or political affiliation, deserves to feel that this country belongs to them.

A New Nigeria is POssible. -PO
