John Tristram, 1959. British farm boy turned merchant seaman turned New York gym regular, he landed in California and quickly became one of Bob Mizer’s more memorable subjects. By the early ’60s he was winning titles on the short-class circuit, including the IFBB Mr. America and Mr. Venice Beach. Between contests he studied French, later teaching it at Los Angeles City College while still showing up in the physique magazines. One of the more accomplished athletes who passed through Mizer’s studio, and one of the few who didn’t pretend otherwise about who he was.
