The anthropormophising of AI, the idea it has consciousness and agency - and can go 'rogue' - is an attempt to limit liability, optimise user engagement and maximise stock value
The more important ontological question, it seems to me, is whether AI would spontaneously produce works of art without prompts, given that, as some AI CEOs argue, they possess something like consciousness. If they did, their media would still be quite limited.
Paul is answering an aesthetic question when Leo asked an ontological one.
Ontology concerns what a thing is, and no amount of training data changes what a model is.
A painting requires a person who understands, intends, and creates.
Generated images come out of a process that predicts pixels, and richer inputs only sharpen the prediction.
A model trained on visual experience still lacks the one doing the experiencing itself.
@MMmarco0 Non c’è stato un uragano ma una tempesta che negli Stati Uniti che si chiama un nor’easter ha fatto parecchi danni sulla costa atlantica. È un fenomeno associato con l’inverno. Molto strano. Tanta forza, Marco!
I’m still trying to understand when universities acquired extraterritorial status for crimes committed on campus or by students. University administration should have nothing to do with the adjudication of crimes. The accused should be prosecuted without university interference.

As a woman who grew up in Iran, I understand why many Iranian women react so vehemently and viscerally to this gesture of solidarity. Encounters with the morality police were (and probably still are) an all-consuming part of women’s everyday lives in Iran. I completely understand their experience of the hijab as an instrument of state coercion and gendered restriction.
But as an anthropologist of the United States, I also understand the danger of importing that experience into Western contexts uncritically; without reckoning with what the same sign signifies in a different context. In the West, the hijab often indexes membership in marginalized Muslim minorities. Therefore, uncritical, universal anti-hijab critiques can easily reinforce Islamophobic and racist discourses.
The problem is not that Iranian women’s experience of the hijab is false. It is that the hijab’s meaning is neither portable nor universal: its social and political meaning changes with context.
As for this particular gesture of solidarity, these French women are correctly recognizing that the policing of women’s bodies takes different forms. Forcing a woman to wear the hijab and forcing her to remove it are different expressions of the same underlying claim: that others may decide what she can or cannot do with her body. A woman’s attire is hers to choose and so are all her other decisions concerning her bodily autonomy.
@newyorker01 Sono assolutamente d’accordo! Secondo me dovrebbe lasciarla lì e allacciarla all’acqua. Come fontana accostata a Corso Vittorio non aveva nessun senso.
