Many Cameroonians believe that Paul Biya’s swearing-in on November 6, 2025, marks the end of the post-election crisis — but history shows that a swearing-in is not the decider of legitimacy. Across Africa, there are powerful precedents proving that the truth of the ballot can prevail even after an incumbent is declared winner and sworn in.

In The Gambia (2016), Yahya Jammeh tried to cling to power after losing to Adama Barrow — even organising his own swearing-in — but was later forced out after regional pressure confirmed the real results. In Côte d’Ivoire (2010), both Laurent Gbagbo and Alassane Ouattara were sworn in, yet international recognition and internal resistance led to Ouattara taking office. And in Malawi (2019), the Constitutional Court annulled an election already won and sworn in by the incumbent, paving the way for opposition leader Lazarus Chakwera’s victory in a re-run.

These examples show that being declared winner and taking the oath of office do not make a leader legitimate — only the truth of the people’s vote does. Cameroon’s case fits this pattern. Evidence gathered by civil society and independent observers suggests that Issa Tchiroma Bakary won the October 12, 2025 election, but the Constitutional Council — known for its loyalty to the ruling CPDM — handed victory to Paul Biya, extending his 43-year rule.

Peaceful protesters calling for truth were met with deadly repression, leaving nearly 50 civilians dead. Yet the people’s response — from nationwide ville morte protests to growing international attention — shows that this story is far from over.

As this analysis reveals, the swearing-in is not the end, but the beginning of a deeper struggle — for truth, legitimacy, and the restoration of the people’s mandate. Just as in The Gambia, Côte d’Ivoire, and Malawi, the lesson is clear: the ballot may be delayed, but it cannot be denied.
