The history of the Irish Channel
The largely working-class neighborhood was, as the name implies, originally settled by mostly immigrants from Ireland in the early 19th century. They came fleeing the great potato famine, looking for work.

The Irish Channel St. Patrick’s Day Committee was organized in the Irish Channel in 1947. The organization credits its survival to their deep, strong roots. Most people are aware of the pre-parade mass, followed by the parade up Magazine St. with hundreds of men in formal attire

The annual downtown St. Patrick's Day parade begins on the corner of Burgundy and Piety in the Bywater, proceeds roughly up Royal, across Esplanade to Decatur, up Canal to Bourbon.
