July 11 is the Feast of St. Benedict — and millions of Catholics around the world wear his medal. But do you know what it actually means?

Known as the "devil-chasing medal," the St. Benedict Medal is one of the most powerful sacramentals in the Catholic Church. Its power comes not from the object itself, but from Christ, who works through the faith of the one who uses it.

The Front:

St. Benedict holds a cross. At his side are a broken cup—after monks tried to poison him, it shattered when he blessed it—and a raven carrying away a poisoned loaf, another failed attempt on his life. Around the edge is the inscription:

Eius in obitu nostro praesentia muniamur

"May we be strengthened by his presence in our hour of death."

The Back:

A large cross bears the initials of the famous prayer:

C.S.P.B. – Crux Sancti Patris Benedicti
"The Cross of our Holy Father Benedict."
C.S.S.M.L. – Crux Sacra Sit Mihi Lux
"May the Holy Cross be my light."

N.D.S.M.D. – Non Draco Sit Mihi Dux
"May the dragon not be my guide."
Around the border is the exorcism prayer:

V.R.S. – Vade Retro, Satana!
"Begone, Satan!"
N.S.M.V. – Numquam Suade Mihi Vana!
"Never tempt me with your vanities!"

S.M.Q.L. – Sunt Mala Quae Libas.
"What you offer is evil."

I.V.B. – Ipse Venena Bibas!
"Drink your own poison!"
At the bottom is a single word:

PAX — Peace.
The medal was formally approved by Pope Benedict XIV in 1742. It became widely known after the miraculous healing of a young man named Brunone, who later entered the Benedictine Order and eventually became Pope St. Leo IX.

Alex Onyia is vindicated! He is my MVP.

When he defended some of the children in his CBT Testing centers, he knew exactly what he was doing. Those children are on FIRE! Alex could vouch for some of them — because he knew that JAMB & WAEC are a walk in the park.

Next time, when he calls out WAEC or JAMB, listen! Don’t reduce everything to tribe or Miracle centers. He has invested heavily in those children. I won’t forget when he ordered (1000 pieces of low cost — fairly used Lenovo Thinkpad PCs from Germany) in a hurry.

He even promised to order thousands more! He keeps fighting for education. He fought for the students of UNN to have better hostels.

He hosts Math Olympiad & trains teachers & pupils. He single-handedly put education back on the map. His advocacy has become an established powerhouse. Alex is global now!

The Presidency are confused. They don’t know how to congratulate the children for winning 12 Gold medals & 3 silver at the STEM Olympiad in Rome, Italy. Congratulating the children could easily be interpreted as promoting Peter Obi.

The world-class performance of the children is why the government must begin to invest in education & sponsor education tournaments.

Their victory is why tribalism & bigotry must die for Nigeria to rise. Aso Rock would have taken all the glory. All they needed to do was reach out & bankroll the children. Congratulating the Geniuses is easy for Peter Gregory Obi.

After all, education is his strongest suit. 👏👏

The three wise men of the East have done it, they made our country Nigeria proud.

Nigeria has won FOUR Gold medals at the International STEM Olympiad in Rome, Italy.

Chimdiebube Onwubiko won Gold in Grade 9.

Don Anele Munachimso won 2 Gold medals, including a Gold medal in Science (Grade 11). He is the best in world science. He is the best in IGCSE Chemistry category in Nigeria as well.

Onyedikachi Egejurum won a Gold medal in Mathematics in the World Primary Category.

Egejurum Onyedikachi is now the best in the world in the Mathematics Primary Category.

This is a perfect triumvirate. THEY DID IT! Congratulations to the Geniuses. Alex Onyia is making education the topic of discussion in Nigeria once again. He has declared a State of Emergency in Education in his own personal capacity. He is making classroom teachers & Nigeria proud. He deserves a national honors.

If Alex did not take the kids to Rome, another country would have won the Gold medals. We must end bad governance in Nigeria. THE BEST OF US MUST LEAD THE REST OF US! 🥇🥇🥇

For the first time in 50 years, the USCCB has authorized a new edition, focused on a more accurate translation of these ancient prayers and including new saints and feast days from the last few decades. And Word on Fire has been chosen to bring this second edition to print.

I am so proud of the work the team has put into making these volumes of the Liturgy of the Hours as beautiful, readable, and durable as possible.

The new edition may be used beginning Ash Wednesday 2027, and while it will be hard to put my current, much-loved volumes on the shelf, I eagerly look forward to using Word on Fire’s Liturgy of the Hours, Second Edition.
