I can’t believe it’s been three years since I graduated from my masters of public health degree, where I studied health inequities and colonialism as a structural determinant of health.

Public health taught me some of the most basic things that so many people and communities, especially Indigenous communities all over the world, already know. That the collective responsibility for health and wellbeing of all peoples and the planet lies on all of us.

For all the students and recent graduates, know that your responsibility lies with the people and the planet - not the institutions you find yourselves in. Use your privilege when you’ve accessed institutions with power to extract the knowledge and resources for people and communities that deserve your labour and time.

There is room for being an academic, a researcher, a clinician, a practitioner, and being an organizer and activist. The work we do and the people we choose to surround ourselves with become the fabric of what our lives ultimately is at the end of the day. When your values and morals are consistent, and when our work reflects that, we can say that we did our part to build that better world we are all fighting for.
