As of the September 8, 2026 service changes for the @MWRTA, we are seeing unprecedented levels of service on our fixed routes.

The way the service is measured is in “service hours” which is the number of hours worth of buses are on the road in a year.

Prior to COVID-19 we were just over 80,000 annual hours. During COVID-19 we dropped down to 60,000 hours. As of the September 8th changes, we have an annualized rate of over 120,000 service hours.

That is 50% more than what we operated prior to COVID-19, and about double where we were during the pandemic.

These hours are spread throughout the region in various ways. Some places it means more frequent service. Others it means weekend or later night service. There are others, such as the 495 Connector, that never had service before.

Prior to the passage of the Fair Share amendment, with expiring federal funds, the MWRTA (and other transit agencies) were facing service cuts of up to 30% by FY27.

Instead, thanks to the investments in public transit by our legislative leaders and the people of Massachusetts, service has been increased by 50%.

Because of this, we’re setting ridership records and providing new and innovative service throughout the region.

Thursday afternoon we took a ride on one of our new trolley busses with Mayor Sisitsky, COO Mike Tusino, City Councilors Phil Ottaviani and Janet Leombruno, Public Information Officer Susan Petroni, and our newest rider, Jack!

We drove a portion of the Route 4 South which will see trolley's on it in this week! We looked at the stops and talked about how exciting it was to have the new vehicles as part of the MWRTA fleet.

Be on the look out, we are slowly rolling out the trolleys on the Route 4 South and Route 7C... see you on board! 🚃☀️
