Venture capital fees make no sense.
Imagine you're a chef.
You grind for years to hone your skills, innovating with cuisine, refining your recipes and menus.
But because of the way the industry works, you can't really significantly raise prices.
If you want to increase your income, the only option is to increase the size of your restaurant.
So you're constantly pulled in two directions; scaling your service or increasing quality. Earning a Michelin star will mean living on Ramen for a decade.
Eventually, you realise that however hard you try, McDonald's franchise owners get paid better so you might as well just do that.
This is how venture capital fee income works.
There's a relatively tight band between 2–2.5% and it doesn't even appear to correlate with performance.
This is a well-studied structural constraint on the ability of quality managers to keep operating a proven early-stage strategy, and a major drag on the industry.
Thanks to @_PeterRyan for listening to me rant about the venture industry's many flaws.
The Power Law Paradox: you're more likely to 10x at scale.
→ 8% of unicorns reach decacorn status.
→ 13% of decacorns reach $100B.
→ 31% of $100B companies have gone on to 10x.
The conventional wisdom: early-stage has the best returns.
The data: you're more likely to 10x at scale.
