L.A. friends, NOW INSTANT is graciously hosting a mini retrospective of my directorial work from 2011-2023 (minus the features). Please come out: https://t.co/nfb1m0fvCN
My friend made a fucking hilarious pitch after we watched Obsession, where he was like “Can you imagine Norm McDonald telling the plot of this movie on Conan, as a story that happened to him?” And I can and it would be incredible.
OK I've now watched the two Karen Sperling features, MAKE A FACE (1971) and THE WAITING ROOM (1973). These movies are WILD. MAKE A FACE is Moshfegh's MY YEAR OF REST & RELAXATION adapted as an F-Giallo; WAITING ROOM anticipates Yvonne Rainer but feels totally singular.
Earlier this week I spoke with Karen Sperling. She is part of the Warner Bros. family but made two incredible, independent psychodramas in the 1970s that can be described as proto-Yvonne Rainer. One was made with the first all-women film crew. They've recently been revived.
Had a nice long chat with my friend Rob Rice on his new film "Ponderosa", the suburbs, paranoid masculinity, and the breakdown of language. It's a long one, I hope you enjoy! https://t.co/iLGdlcCYs5
