From Groundnuts to Greatness!
Once upon a time, #Uganda railways was the heartbeat of the nation -steel veins carrying hopes, stories, and even 'groundnut'-fueled ambitions.
Yes, a large portion of the track used for the Pakwach extension came from Tanzania’s ill-fated "Groundnut" Scheme of 1947.
Salvaged from Nachingwea to Mtwara, the track was shipped through Mombasa, bolted into Uganda’s soil, and stretched past Soroti and Gulu.
Official sanction for building the railway to Mityana was given in 1951, and for the continuation to Kasese in 1952.
From failed crops in Tanzania to roaring engines, it found a new purpose on Ugandan soil -a redemption arc as unlikely as it was spectacular.
These trains weren’t just transport; they were portals to adventure. The double-engine beasts thundered through Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls National Parks, where signs reminded everyone, “Elephants have the right of way.”
The tracks wove through lush landscapes, linking Mbale, Jinja, Gulu, Soroti, Lira, and Pakwach. To the west, it wound its way through Mityana to Kasese.
Not forgetting there was a passenger train to Nairobi and Mombasa.
And they carried everything.
Onboard, passengers traded stories for roasted groundnuts, cassava, chicken at stops like Tororo, and -who knows, contented travellers carved their initials into seats, their futures rattling with the rhythm of the train.
But time, and perhaps complacency, was unkind. By the late 1980s, the network had fallen into disrepair. Stolen sleepers created dangerous gaps, and the once-proud network dwindled to a shadow of itself.
Today, only the Kampala-Mukono line clings to life, a faint pulse in a fading dream.
Yet, the legacy lingers. The Pakwach extension, born from 'Groundnut' Scheme rubble, reminds us of second chances.
Those tracks, now quiet, still beckon with whispers of what once was and what could be again.
Perhaps it’s time to dream anew. And there are distant whispers of a revival. And some signs too.
After all, if 'groundnuts' can boost a railway, who’s to say Uganda’s rails can’t roar again?
And they will. God willing!

20 years ago mike riley did something 10x worse on tape. Then instead of an immediate suspension, he got promoted to the head of the PGMOL from 2009-2023.
We don’t forget.
#Arsenal fans will focus on Edu not signing a striker, but overlook the fact that he beat City to the signing of Declan Rice, got Martin Ødegaard for just £30m, and managed to secure Saka, Saliba and all our top players on long deals. Short memories. #AFC
70 minutes into #Arsenal’s 5-0 win against Chelsea, and the commentators had already given Martin Ødegaard MOTM, despite Havertz and White each being on a hat trick. He was that good. We’ve managed without him, but his absence has been obvious. #AFC

Former Prime Minister of Australia Malcolm Turnbull: “When you see Trump with Putin, as I have on a few occasions, he’s like the 12-year-old boy that goes to high school and meets the captain of the football team. ‘My hero!’ It’s really creepy…the creepiness was palpable”
