I just finished my first 72-hour fast.
Here are my main takeaways:
1. There are two types of hunger:
• Perceived hunger, caused by ghrelin release (your body’s internal clock telling you when to eat based on historical patterns)
• Dopaminergic hunger — the urge to eat in an attempt to escape the work you’re doing. Similar to how nicotine gives you a dopamine spike that makes work feel easier
Very rarely are you running on empty.
Taking down a bar of chocolate fries your dopamine the same way 30 minutes of YouTube shorts does.
2. Hunger was masking avoidance.
Most “lunch breaks” I took were simply to avoid doing the thing.
I noticed a meaningful increase in my drive and ambition during the fast as a downstream effect.
Highly recommend trying an extended fast, even 48 hours to learn more about yourself physically and spiritually.
