Leader @FemkeGerritse retains red and sees teammate win: ‘Dream scenario’

Femke Gerritse: ‘It was special to ride in red. How I experienced my first day as leader in the general classification? Hectic! The first stretch up to the first climb everyone was constantly trying to jump away. Uphill on that first climb there was not super hard riding, so I could easily keep up with that. Then again I got the perfect lead-out from the team at the intermediate sprint. Everyone went for it one hundred percent. The others even had a gap. That was cool to see. Because I took the full pot there, I ended up keeping the red jersey.’

‘On the last climb, in the last one-and-a-half kilometres uphill, they were pushing so hard. I just exploded completely. For me, Mischa Bredewold was once again golden today. She too had to drop, but she rode incredibly hard in the chase in the descent. All credits to her that we got back in front. At that moment I saw that Anna van der Breggen had got away and I shouted to Mischa: ANNA IS AWAY SOLO! That was amazing to see.’

Tomorrow I hope to start in a red sprint suit.I will enjoy it by all means.’

Femke Gerritse reacts after winning her first ever WorldTour race at @LaVueltaFem

"This is so crazy. I didn't expect this today. This was the perfect day. In the bonification sprint I was already the fastest and then I noticed that I had good sprint legs. In the final my teammates really gave the perfect lead-out, right out of the book. It was a chaotic final, but I could calmly follow their wheel. Anna van der Breggen did a great job on that roundabout and a bit later Mischa Bredewold took over. They both held on for so long and brought me to the finish line perfectly. Then I went on. At about 175 metres from the finish I felt Marianne Vos coming alongside me and then I was able to accelerate again and so I kept first place. Really crazy to win a stage in the Vuelta."

"There are not that many who have managed to beat Marianne Vos in a sprint. That I succeeded is perhaps what makes me most proud. Marianne has been one of my idols since childhood. We are both 'Brabanders' (from the same region) and I still look up to her. So to beat her now and win a stage in the Vuelta like that, that's really bizarre."

"Yesterday we grabbed next to the red jersey because I made a mistake myself towards the last corner and then got held up behind a crash. So I did dream of red, but I didn't think it would happen today. For that, everything had to be just perfect, which was the case. Everyone was so good today. This is really a win and red jersey for the team."

"This is my best win ever, especially for the way we did it with the team. This is also my first ever WorldTour victory and leader's jersey. It really is a dream come true. But I don't quite realise it yet, it still has to sink in. It's suddenly going very fast for me this season."
