@Youfullofbs they don’t result in the same thing. if they built their league with money from Sela then they did receive Saudi investment and are lying to their audience, whether they cut it off after the backlash or not.
in FAFO Chiney says “project b has maintained that every step of the way there has been no Saudi funding, no Saudi investment, no Saudi ownership.” but the next sentence is that they haven’t worked with Sela “in a couple years.” which is it? not in a couple years or not at all?
everyone gotta understand just bc you are a fan of someone doesnt mean you have to be blind to everything they do people are disappointed bc they spent love money and time to support her and trusted her no one is out here “canceling” her they’re just disappointed and upset
So after doing a bit of research this is what I found: Project B because the league's massive liquid cash spending—estimated at $40 million to $50 million upfront to pay elite women's basketball players 1,000% market raises—perfectly mirrors the aggressive financial playbook used by Saudi-funded entities like LIV Golf. While co-founders Grady Burnett and Geoff Prentice insist they have closed an initial round funded strictly by Western venture capital, critics remain highly skeptical due to the league’s confirmed operational ties to the Saudi PIF-owned events firm, Sela. Whether the cash comes from deep-pocketed tech VCs betting on a global women’s and men's sports platform or through indirect Middle Eastern investment funds, the suspicion is smart financial intuition based on the sheer, unprecedented amount of money being burned before a single game is played.
No matter how much they try to distance themselves now, the league had a formal, confirmed partnership with Sela, a global events company owned entirely by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF). When the league first launched, co-founder Grady Burnett openly admitted to reporters that Sela was their official event partner. Even if they try to minimize it today by calling them a "vendor," having a primary operations contract with a sovereign wealth fund's subsidiary is a major, undeniable tie to Saudi Arabia.
This is a classic corporate PR pivot: they are using the fact that the partnership is currently dead to pretend it was never alive.
I would just like to know where they’re getting this amount of money✌🏻
The things y'all are saying to justify this...idk stanning rich people means at some point they're gonna do something vaguely morally questionable. You don't have to unstan but you also don't have to justify everything, especially not in the way some of y'all are right now 🤷🏾♀️
What I am not gonna do is play stupid. I don’t care how many times they deny Saudi investment. Everyone knows how these things are structured and everyone should know nothing is “Saudi backed” until it is. That’s how blood money works ✌🏽
i understand that people want to believe azzi would have higher standards than this, but just believing what the league says at face value without actually researching their investors makes all of us look stupid
