@drkiwicj Thanks Chris, really appreciated your perspective on developing a career and challenging some of the dogmas of 'success'. Personally well timed!
This interview from yesterday with a NZ intensive care doctor who worked in the UK health system as it was overrun by Covid is a quietly potent demolition of every hare-brained hot take.

Congratulations to Dr Hannah Lawn (SMO) and Dr Ben McConchie (RMO), the 2018 recipients of the NZMSA/NZMA Medical Teaching Awards! These two doctors have exemplified outstanding passion and commitment to teaching in their... https://t.co/WmquZZISaR
All medical students will now be able to finish their degree, regardless of their financial position! Kudos must go to the many NZMSA teams who put countless hours in to this advocacy - the brick wall we've been banging our head against for 8 years has finally fallen over! 🎉 https://t.co/T9vhBRN8Qy
@izzyelle Have to say though that the majority of RMOs and SMOs I see are really good with students. You quickly learn to latch on to those that make you feel welcome and forget those that don't. With hindsight you realise that some just aren't worth the effort!
@izzyelle I think about this all the time! I don't ever want to forget what it's like to be a med student on the outer of a team or in a clinic where they can't be bothered telling me what's going on. And I can't wait to have some students 'under' me to start setting some good examples.
@emmawehipeihana @NZMSA NZMSA talked to the banks a couple of years ago and at the time they wouldn’t provide loans to students with no income and/or no guarantor. There is a bit of help for Otago students who are making $10k loans available but not in Auckland. Also MAS can do $5k interest free.
@emmawehipeihana Unfortunately despite trying, we haven't heard anything from the Minister on the EFTS cap since the election! We don't have any reason to believe they'll go back on their campaign pledge but the delay isn't helping those who've already run out and need to enrol for next year.
@norm_odonnell What if it stops them from finishing? Waste of $200k+ govt investment. One more year of student loan is only $15-20k and it's paid back!
@norm_odonnell People who did an Hons or Masters degree before going to med school. They're currently not covered by stdt loan for at least the last year.
