I am deeply troubled by reports of physical and chemical force being used inside ICE detention centers.

No person loses their humanity because they are detained. No system should be allowed to hide suffering behind walls, paperwork, or policy language.

My father, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., taught us that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. That includes the places many people never see, where vulnerable human beings are too often unseen, unheard, and unprotected.

We cannot create the Beloved Community while accepting cruelty as governance.

We need accountability. We need compassion. We need policies rooted in human dignity.

On August 6, 1965, the Voting Rights Act was signed into law as my father looked on. It was not a gift. It was the result of sacrifice, courage, organizing, and nonviolent struggle.

I believe my father would be deeply troubled by the ongoing efforts to weaken voting rights and make fair representation harder to secure. But I also believe he would not want us to surrender to frustration or despair.

We have work to do. We must organize with discipline, demand new voting rights protections, and continue pressing toward a democracy where every voice is valued and every vote is protected.
