In his Lincoln Memorial speech in 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King famously said people should be judged on “the content of their character.”
Today this idea is being attacked on both sides of the political extremes. We’re told merit and values either don’t exist, or aren’t what really matter.
Activists like Ibram X Kendi argue that “the only remedy to past discrimination is present discrimination”, while writers like Robin DiAngelo write that being less oppressive means being “less white”. Meanwhile, woke right X lights ablaze with a racial animus unseen in the West in decades.
I recently interviewed The Free Press’ Coleman Hughes, whose book The End of Race Politics brings Dr. King’s arguments to life for our times.
We discussed the blowback he experienced in the mainstream for advocating colourblindness, why it’s the only possible foundation for a fair and just society, the impact of the culture war and social media on today’s youth, and other topics.
Coleman is a voice of reason in these wild times and I can’t recommend his work highly enough … hope you all enjoy !!

There is actually a really deep and important potential discussion here, one which X is probably the worst medium for. On one hand it’s clear to anyone who actually listens that Prof Saad isn’t making a case “against empathy” (one could even argue the opposite). That’s a politicized straw man, and Dr Pinker’s already moved away from this. On the other, what happened in the Middle East isn’t necessarily destiny in North America - the socio-historical and demographic realities are just too different. In the middle there are clearly well articulated and important issues to be discussed in a rational and open way. Wish this could happen without the reductiveness our politically supercharged era imposes!
Dr. Rupert Sheldrake @RupertSheldrake has long been a controversial figure in modern science.
He's been maligned, cancelled and criticized for poking at the excess certainty of scientists on big, unsolved questions (his name still comes up when you Google "the banned TED talk").
Is the universe really "just a big machine"? Is free will "just an illusion"?
The core of this conversation was about whether science today still allows for radical curiosity, a sense of mystery and awe, and a spiritual understanding of life rooted in consciousness, not matter.
What ensued was a majestic, renegade history of science by Dr. Sheldrake, discussing the blind spots of materialism, and a summary of his later work, in which he examines the scientific evidence for spiritual practices.
I absolutely loved this conversation.

@Osint613 It’s not because “one guy” wants this. You’re “allowing it” because YOUR President wants it. And that’s how YOUR constitution works. Go have an argument with your founding fathers.
The end. 🙄 this guy
@piersmorgan Cuz we’re a tiny minority not known for athletics and it’s cool to us when one of ours does something big like this … patriotism doesn’t consume all
@Jimmy_3_Tech@billburr Hehe US was a fantastic team, only team we were scared of … no shame in losing a game to them, especially how that particular game went …

@KonstantinKisin Thinkers have been talking about, writing about, and predicting the “decline of the West” for centuries. All have only one thing in common: they were wrong. We just tolerate, even encourage, self criticism. Which is one of the reasons we keep self correcting.
@brentdjohnson@GadSaad So the majority of Americans believes its political elites are in cahoots with evil interdimensional aliens? Hope not for America lol
