Many use CHIP and other methods to stay in their own homes. Inflation eats away at their income from even indexed pensions. Senior care is expensive.

Here’s the problem with simply “making a deal” with the U.S. as this article suggests. Mexico and the United States are not negotiating a new CUSMA, and that’s not even being reported by anyone. This is poor framing. Both Mexico and Canada are negotiating interim bilateral deals outside of CUSMA with the U.S.

It is obvious that the United States is using high tariffs on Canada and Mexico to extract trade concessions from both countries before the formal CUSMA negotiations begin, which are set now for 2027.

If Mexico wants to weaken their position in order to seek temporary reprieve from U.S. tariffs, that’s fine. Remember that Mexico is in a far weaker position than Canada to begin with. We shouldn’t try to mirror Mexico in any way. But what this article is asking Carney and the Canadian side to do doesn’t make much sense. Any concessions today to hammer out an interim bilateral deal with the U.S. will never be given back to Canada in formal CUSMA negotiations.

So why weaken your own hand before the real negotiations actually even start?
