Since some Burundian social media accounts are joining the Congolese propaganda team of @PatrickMuyaya to forge communiqués in the name of Rwanda's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, falsifying facts about the President Kagame's recent inauguration by reducing the number of heads of state and senior officials who attended the event, let's remind the Burundians about their past inaugurations and why they should not compare themselves to Rwanda. Rwanda aims to achieve what others have accomplished, not to compare itself to those struggling with daily necessities.
1) President Ndayishimiye was sworn in as President on June 18, 2020, and NO HEAD OF STATE attended the event.
2) Pierre Nkurunziza was sworn in as Burundi’s President (in hiding) on June 20, 2015, in a surprise event. The ceremony was announced only a few hours in advance. Even journalists in Burundi were surprised to wake up to the news of the swearing-in ceremony. He was sworn in while hundreds of people were killed and thousands imprisoned within a month.
3) Towards the end of August 2010, President Nkurunziza was sworn in as President of Burundi. You had a special guest, President Kagame, who was the sole head of state to attend the event. At that time, Burundi was following the Arusha Peace Agreement, which President Kagame and other regional heads of state had signed as witnesses and contributors. Nkurunziza's speech was about thanking him for his role in stabilizing Burundi. One year before, Burundi was unable to contribute to the EAC, and Rwanda supported them by making its contribution.
On August 26, 2005, President Nkurunziza, a former rebel leader, was sworn in and pledged to respect the Constitution and the Arusha Agreement, banning all ideologies of ethnic division and genocide. In 2015, he violated his 2005 oath.
In 2005, heads of state from the region attended the inauguration to support the efforts to cement the Arusha Agreement. President Kagame's message that time about unity and the development of Burundians is still valid today. Watch in the attached video.
