The WHO incident management team held its daily outbreak response meeting, strategising on enhanced WHO support in surveillance, supplies & logistics, recovery patient program, etc, to effectively contribute to 🇷🇼 government efforts to #StopMarburg
As #Marburg cases continue to decline, health workers at #Rwanda's 🇷🇼 treatment centre have time to learn more about the context of the disease. @WHO has trained 62 multidisciplinary health workers on the theory of Marburg, providing critical knowledge to inform clinical practice
Infection prevention and control measures to curb the #Marburg outbreak in #Rwanda are ongoing. @WHO has worked with @RwandaHealth to train 1000 health workers and supported 6 health facilities in Kigali to reinforce IPC measures to break the chain of infection and recover.
In order to bolster surveillance activities, @WHO supported @RwandaHealth to develop standard operating procedures for Marburg surveillance and train over 120 trainers. The training is being cascaded to the district and sector level to build on the ground capacity.
.@WHO DG @DrTedros visited the #Marburg treatment centre in Kigali and met frontline health workers and patients, most of whom are themselves health workers. He thanked them for their service, commending them for their resilience and determination to save the lives of colleagues.
Thank you @RwandaHealth and Minister @nsanzimanasabin for giving me a tour through the emergency operation centre that the #Marburg response is coordinated from. I’m in particular impressed with the way technology is being used to provide real-time data and analysis for decision makers to coordinate the results efficiently.
My appreciation for all staff involved in the response.
I returned this morning from Kigali, where I witnessed firsthand #Rwanda’s response to the #Marburg outbreak. We’re pleased that there have been no new cases and deaths in the past six days; and I could see the outbreak is being managed under strong leadership.
But we are dealing with one of the world’s most dangerous viruses, and continued vigilance is essential.
@WHO will continue to support the government. Enhanced surveillance, contact tracing and infection prevention and control measures must continue at scale until the outbreak is declared over.
Tonight #TheSummitRW returns. A conversation we must have. Live stream link (click the notification 🔔 bell to be alerted when we go live) https://t.co/JGB0LRAznZ
Before leaving Kigali, I met with @WHORwanda staff and thanked them for their work with @RwandaHealth to end the #Marburg outbreak, but also to advance other areas of public health to achieve #HealthForAll.
We also brainstormed ways to create more contractual stability for colleagues in the country - an issue we're also working on around the world as One WHO.

Main take-away so far from very interesting presser on #Marburg outbreak in Rwanda: @nsanzimanasabin says all cases are linked to known infection chains. The outbreak is one major cluster with three branches.
Today @WHO DG @DrTedros joined @nsanzimanasabin, Minister of Health in #Rwanda, for an update on the #Marburg outbreak situation and response:

I had a fruitful conversation with my brother, President @PaulKagame, regarding #Rwanda’s ongoing response to the #Marburg outbreak.
I expressed my appreciation for his leadership and the effective management of the outbreak response, along with his commitment to end it soon.
We also discussed the significant investments in establishing a local vaccine manufacturing facility in Kigali, which is well underway and making significant progress, leveraging lessons learned from COVID-19 to address the equity challenges faced by Africa.
Today, @DrTedros ended his mission to Rwanda where he had the opportunity to assess the response to the Marburg virus disease outbreak.
The DG has commended the Government of Rwanda for its swift and effective measures to contain the outbreak.
